I was wondering if anyone here can comment on the sound quality of Wind and Wuthering on the ATCO label vs. Charisma Mad Hatter? I'm thinking of picking up an original UK pressing of WW on the Charisma Mad Hatter label. I have the ATCO. Is the Charisma any different? better?

    Thanks
    John

If I get a chance, I'll do a straight compare; I have a few copies, one UK original, one Atco, a Japanese and a UK blue label 80s reissue. I won't for the sake of sanity, listen to 'em all at once!

I have all three, and IMHO, The Japan Charisma LP sounds the best.

I can't comment as I've never owned any, but I thought a big complaint was that on both the UK and US vinyl there is a painful absence of bass. Or am I mixing that up and that was just the original CDs?

LesPaul666, do you recall why you preferred the Japanese Charisma? Did they happen to boost the lower frequencies?

The ATCO pressing sounds weak by comparison ...like dishwater......try the UK version instead...it may be better. Michael Boyce

I've got an original UK Charisma pressing (with textured album cover). Haven't played it in awhile, but recall being unimpressed. As someone mentioned previously, an obvious lack of low end (which is also evident on some CD versions).

To be quite honest, aside from it being much fuller than any of the other pressings I've heard(UK and US, etc), It's got much more life and clarity, than the others. WHen I get a chance I'll do a little needle drop of it.:)

    No contest, IMHO.

I had an unimpressive Canadian ATCO for years and picked up an original UK Charisma last year. It wasn't much better. :shake:

They're *both* lousy. Give the Japan LP a shot.:agree:

I have the original UK and Japanese pressings. Here are 96/24 .aiff excerpts of each—files are around 100MB each.

    The Japanese excerpt is here.

    The UK excerpt is there.

    Enjoy !

Which Charisma LP from the UK were you considering the pinkish Mad Hatter one or the 80s blue reissue with the newer Charisma logo (big difference).

I love my original Atco SD 36-144 pressing.

    Thanks, Jamie!

I really think this pressing is more what they intended for this album to sound like. The best CD V/C versions are not bad, but it seems this Charisma Japan LP got the mastering right, and maybe they just had good tapes to work with. Who knows, it could have been cut in the UK and the metalwork sent over to Nippon.

I haven't listened to this LP in years, I put it on for the needle drop, and had to listen to the whole thing.:D

The V/C CD is by far the best digital version but your needle drop are much better. There's actually some low end! :)

I have this pressing too. Maybe someday (when my table is returned) I'll do a nice transfer.

Compared to my Germany made LP I think this sample sounds slightly “smiley-faced” being a little too bright in spots. To me the Germany LP I have sounds a little more balanced.

    This is the LP I have: Catalog number 9124 003 and matrix “10 AA9124003 1Y 320 and 10 AA9124003 2Y 320”
