The Rush Vinyl Pressings Thread

    Hello Rush Fans,

I thought it would be a good idea to have a comprehensive list/discussion of Rush's various vinyl pressings. It can serve as a one stop shop for Rush vinyl related questions.

Why don't we go about this album by album in order of release at first. Then, after we are finished, any questions/additions can be taken out of order.

In the next thread I'll dump all of my Rush deadwax information. This is just so I have a place to keep it. After that, I will start a new thread for each album.

    Let's have fun!

    Rush - Self Titled

OK. Let's get started. This is a little odd because I don't own a copy of the first album except for the one in Archives and we will discuss Archives separately.

Please post your deadwax information for the first Rush album and let's open up the floor for any information/questions on Rush S/T.

First questions comes from me. Does anyone know who mastered the Canadian Moon records version of the album?

    Thanks for responding.

    Two questions:

    Is this a US pressing?
Does it have the skyline or black label?

Looks like you have a Gilbert Kong mastering on side one. I wonder where your side two came from...

    How to read Mercury deadwax

While I'm waiting for the Rush s/t information and questions to come flooding in , maybe we can talk about how to interpret the deadwax info on Mercury records pressings.

    Here's an example:

    SRM-1-1011-A-CTI

1011 I'm pretty sure is the catalog number for the record.
A is the side of the record.

That leaves us with SRM, 1, and CTI (CP, C1, C2, PRC, PRCR, HRM). Does anyone out there know what these signify? It will help us later in discussions.

JAMF stands for Just Another Mastering Facility.

    Thanks!

Good thread idea. I'll post the details of PW Anthem tomorrow together with UK 2112 and A Farewell To Kings.
Let's start with the bad news, eh?
My Anthem 1977 credit Wally cut Fly By Night and UK Mercury 2112 have gone AWL!

Rush S/T UK Mercury PRICE 18 (1984 re-issue) Blue label
Matrix PRICE A1/B1. Comment decent sounding with thick quiet vinyl.

comment: Picture inner sleeve. This copy bought in April 1982 over here.

Permanent Waves Anthem ANR-1-1024 First issue. picture inner sleeve
    Yonge Street address present.
    Matrix Handwritten Side 1 ANR-1-1021-A (1) "Trident UK" side 2 ANR-1-1021-B(2) RAYS
Comment: Trident was the UK mastering house credited on the sleeve and RayS is Ray Staff, the Mastering engineer responsible. This is gorgeous sounding and fairly quiet.

Well, mine is a Canadian pressing on Anthem. The info in the deadwax is simply ANR-1-1001 followed by "Side 1" and "Side 2". There is other hand-etched info in the deadwax but it has been scratched out. Also in the deadwax is a circle within a circle (sort of like a target). Not sure if that means much.

The back cover lists Anthem's mailing address on Yonge st in Oak Ridges, Ontario. Also states it's distributed by Capitol Records - EMI of Canada Ltd with their Mississauga address.

Earliest Anthem Records may not have listed the Capitol info on the sleeve. Perhaps the catalogue number was also different and that it what has been scratched out in the deadwax.

    Cheers,
    Chris

Thanks Chris. Do you have any idea of the vintage of your record? Could you please describe the label? Is there a bar code?

This pressing probably dates from 1977 - 1979 is my best guess. It's the standard Anthem blue label (darker blue at the top turning lighter towards the bottom. Pre-bar code era. In the late '70s Capitol started putting a sticker on Anthem label records shrink-wrap stating that they were distributed by them. Since the Capitol info is printed on the sleeve, that likely means it was manufactured shortly after that.

    Cheers,
    Chris

I have two copies of Rushs' self titled.

First is Moon Records. Deadwax has mn-100-A. RUSH Printed in Red on Jacket
Second is Mercury Skyline. Deadwax side 1 has SRM-1-1011-A-CAL-RE Q then it reads G KONG Rush printed in Pink on Jacket

    Both Canadian issues

Taken from http://www.wellers.demon.co.uk/Rush and Anthem Records.htm

"Initially Polydor manufactured and distributed Anthem releases in Canada, but they were replaced by Capitol-EMI in March 1978, by CBS in October 1989 (CBS were acquired by Sony in 1988), and by MCA Records (now called Universal Music) in October 1995."

Ah, yes. I now recall the change from Polydor to Capitol. I was working at a record shop at the time. The Capitol sticker on the shrink-wrap was likely to denote the new distributor of some old stock.

Looks like SRM means it was a Mercury pressing. The 1, I think, means that the album had one record. All The World's A Stage and Exit Stage Left have a 2 in this position. Archives has a 3 in this position.

I'm guessing that CTI, CP, HRM, PRC, etc. indicate the pressing plant used? Is there anyone with any info on this?

    US Pressing Plant Initials

Here are some of the pressing plant codes I've found so far. They mostly came from the Hoffman site.

HRM = Hauppauge Record Manufacturing, Long Island, NY
CT = Columbia, Terre Haute, IN
    CP = Columbia, Pitman, NJ
PRC = PRC Recording Corp, Richmond, IN
PRC-R = PRC Recording Corp, Richmond, IN
PRC-C = PRC Recording Corp, Compton, CA
