OK it's not high art but something about this show I really liked as a teenager (make that someone, yes, it was Susan Saint James- naturally!)
BUT wasn't there a disappointing final season just called Macmillian with dear ol' Rock and no Sally? And am I imagining it or did the first episode explain the new situation with the words; "well, in the six months since your wife died in a plane crash you've been pretty glum, why not go on holiday and pull a new chick?" or something close to that. was that the ONLY reference to his ever having been married? They must have been pretty sore at St James leaving the show- or- well, what's the story? Anyone?

I remember that show (both versions). I was surprised to see that it aired as late as '77.

They just don't write dialogue like that anymore.

  5. What's interesting is the lack of interest the public had for MacMillian compared to the earlier show....

The only thing that kept me coming back to "McMillan & Wife" was a chance
to see Susan St. James in her "sleepwear"...

The big question (other than for the obvious corporate reasons) is, why haven't the subsequent seasons after the first been released on DVD?

I wonder the same as I live the show and want them all.
    Maybe poor sales, who knows.
Have you noticed how well shot it was?

Wow, haven't thought of that shop in years.

    Really liked it :agree:

Wasn't it part of a whole series (the series name escapes me) of detective shows on one of the networks?

Banacek was part of it too I think, maybe a Dennis Weaver show and perhaps even Columbo.

Edit: My memory is better than I thought.

NBC Mystery Movie with rotating shows in the same time slot.

The Dennis Weaver show was McLeod.

Also [I]Madigan, Hec Ramsey, Snoop Sisters, Quincy M.E and a few others I don't recall.

Why didn't Susan St. James just do a spinoff? I think that a lot of people would probably have watched "Wife". :D

    Cheers,

You should get Netflix and if you have good internet a Blu Ray player that can stream Netflix or Roku box ($79 at Amazon). Netflix has all 6 seasons available to watch through their streaming service (you can get a basic membership for $9/month).

Slightly OT but has anyone seen the Season 1 and Season 2 Banacek DVDs?

Am wondering what the picture quality is like.

It's not too late! 'Widow' coming your way on NBC this fall?!

  18. It was "McCloud".

  19. I agree. Maybe THAT's why the show died...

Come to think of it, didn't Sally McMillan move to Greenwich Village and live with a woman? Or was that Kate and Allie?

Our family used to watch this. The show was really well done. I vaguely remember the retooled show. I bet we quit tuning in. As a kid, I always thought the Nancy Walker character was funny. I was also old enough to enjoy Susan St. James in her sleepwear.
