People, I love ya but there is no such word as VINYLS. It's "VINYL", no 's' at end.

You don't say "I have some moneys in my wallet" and you don't say "I have some vinyls in my collection".

It's VINYL. As in "I have a bunch of used vinyl for sale".

    Please?

    Thanks!:righton:

Note: I never even use the word VINYL. It's RECORDS to me. As in "Come on over and we'll listen to records".

Saying "Come on over and we'll listen to vinyl" is too much an audiophile thing for me, a modern distancing from shellac or something and a slap at digital media. I play Robert Johnson and Carl Perkins, not Patricia Barber.

  2. Another reason why I like CDs, they can afford a proper plural.

    Anyways.;)

If I can't play my vinyls, how will I enjoy my musics?

Steve, "vinyls" is a nowadays thing, pretty much used only by younger folks who did not grow up with rekkids.

"vinyl" is a material, thus uncountable, but new usages always crop up. Why doesn't anybody call them what they are? They are "vinyl discs". "records" are "recordings".
"money" can indeed be used in a countable sense.
Nobody complains when you order "two waters" or "two coffees".

I used to cringe, but now it's a couple of years since I first met this usage and while I'll never say vinyls myself, I can hear it and not react. Language changes, peeps. :)D)

I think this "vinyls" thing is most commonly used by people who's first language isn't english. People who use this term and their first language is english, they make themselves sound ignorant.

Personally, I do find this word irritating. I think of it as a by-product of the vinyl resurgence, because it seems to me that it's most often used by relative newcomers.

I think most record collectors would say they listen to 'records'. 'Vinyl' is for when you need to be specific, or contrast formats e.g. "Does that place sell vinyl?"

while we must allow for language to grow, shouldn't there be checks against acceptance of simply wrong usage / words?

i don't let peoples words bother me, even if they are wrong or wrong to me.

    "vinyls" especially doesn't bother me.

to me, a four record long player is made up of four vinyls... four vinyl sounds dumb unless you put the word records at the end....

    1. "i've got a few vinyls you might like to check out."

    2. "i've got a few vinyl you might like to check out."

    3. "i've got a few records you might like to check out."

    number two doesn't sound correct.

I'd play Robert Johnson and Carl Perkins before I'd play any Patricia Barber recordings and in fact, I don't have any of her recordings in any format, but I have Robert Johnson and Carl Perkins on CD. I am aware that there is no such word as vinyls, but thanks for this post anyway.

Always been record(s) for me and they were housed in albums or jackets! Actually I still use the word Album to describe a record. "Did you listen to the new Zeppelin album that just came out?

It still feels funny writing vinyl or saying buying new vinyl! Oh well, times change, as do words.

There are. They used to be called dictionaries.

Things move fast enough not to be caught by them. Some things stick, some don't.

I see the usage of vinyls to be a natural consequence of the equally incorrect CDs (no one pluralises an abbreviation, unless they're talking about multiple occurrences in written works) - yet there we are.
