Yeah, I always thought that was odd.

Here is a recap of the "rules" to qualify for this list. I had been confused, so I hope the OP doesn't mind this simple recap.

CBS/Sony (CSR) pressed discs for the US market:

where this extra bit also applies to the inserts:

    Don't mind at all. That's perfect, thanks!:righton:

  4. I have never seen a CSR Japan pressed CBS US disc after DADC USA started making CDs for the US market. Not one. Anyone else - chime in.

The smooth sided cases are not a reflection of date sometimes. I have a Deep Purple/Machine Head CD on WEA/WB and it is a first WEA Mfg run from 1987 and it came and still have it, in a smooth case.

The Denon and JVC Japan US CBS discs are definitely way after the DADC plant opened up. 1986. Look at the CD release dates of other titles that were first pressings on Denon or JVC Japan sourced CDs (Chicago, Aerosmith titles, etc.) and this will confirm. I have the Denon Boston CD and I bought it well after the DADC was out and common and it was new stock.

Well, this means that I'll now have an easier time deciding which early DADC discs to collect- whenever I find a Denon/JVC Columbia/CBS, then I'll be hunting for the "early" DADC!!

It's obviously up to you, but I often find that the early DADC pressings are much more common. Those Japanese JVC and Denon pressings are generally tough to find. In the case of Boston, the Japanese Denon pressing has a unique mastering that I prefer to the one on U.S. pressings.

We can clear this up easily enough. What is the full matrix number?

Actually, the main definition of "record" is simply a recording of something, no matter what the format. By that definition, LP's, 45's, Edison cylinders, piano rolls, 78's, minidiscs, 8-tracks, 4-tracks, cassettes, reel-to-reels and yes, Compact Discs, are all records. A secondary definition of "record" has also come mean a flat round vinyl (or some other plastic) disc, colloquially, probably because that was the primary playback format for several decades.

I've also thought the "Record manufactured in Japan..." was odd, but keep in mind that back in 1983, the Compact Disc format was brand new, and short hands that we take for granted now, were not set in stone yet. The word "Disc" probably wasn't considered descriptive enough. By late 1983, or early 1984, the line was changed to "Disc manufactured..."

Not all Japanese NC/JVC's were preceded by a US DADC pressing! One well-known example is Pink Floyd - Animals. The first pressing for US consumption was the Nippon Columbia/DENON pressing.

  10. Correct - some of the Chicago and Aerosmith were first pressings from Denon and JVC Japan.

ok, there's the clear plastic hub, then a black/gray circle line around the plastic hub...etched in the aluminum of that black circle reads CGK 37542 A1ES (or it could be AIE5, my eyes are getting a workout), hopefully that's enough information for a verdict

Agreed! The Boston s/t original version is a wonderful sounding disc! Wouldn't part with it for anything!

That is a JVC pressing. Not what the OP is looking for.

See Keith's post in this thread to see what a CBS/Sony (the plant, not the record company!) pressing should look like. The first part of the matrix number will be something along the lines of DIDP-20080. The second part will be something like 11, or 11A1, 11A2, or 61B7. Some later pressings will have 5 plus marks (+++++) following the matrix number.

Thanks Keith. What I intended to convey was that for each JVC/Denon that I do find, then I'll also get the DADC. The DADCs are generally easier to find, so I haven't quite determined which of them I'd like in my collection. I do buy any Exc or better JVC/Denon on the Columbia label and I only have roughly 20 so far.

I'll have to look over the inserts on my CSR discs. I document my CDs in a database, but I don't have a field for this detail. Yet!

Question: Is there a CSR x3 of Chuck Mangione - Disguise? I have a US DADC.

I've been looking for one for many years. So far, nada. I, too, would like a definite answer, so I'll know whether to keep looking, or cross it off the list.

  20. Here's one for the list:

CK 39613 Paul McCartney - Give My Regards To Broad Street

CSR Compact Disc repeating 3x in center hub.

Inserts lack either "Record manufactured in Japan..." or "Disc manufactured in Japan...".

Speaking of, for those who have made contributions to The List (above),

could you also provide the DIDP number of the disc?

And could we continue to post those?

    Thanks, everyone!:wave::righton:
