I'd add the Greatest Hits Vol.2 cd on Polydor (or Polar) to that as it's the same mastering as the Atlantic. There was a thread somewhere where both were compared and the conclusion was that they're identical in terms of mastering. (I've got the target and the disc has the catalogue number for the Polydor version on the centre hub...)

I think this thread will be more valuable if it sticks to CDs.

It may be nice to have a separate thread with the two linked.

Too bad you were not more specific in this post. Is this in reference to Joe Satriani's Engines of Creation SACD?

This is a GREAT thread LeeS, thanks for starting it! As for Herb's "Definitive Hits", I'm kind of shocked that Steve really liked this, as I found it to be a bit muddy on certain tracks and it seems that whatever tapes (I'm sadly guessing the original master tapes?) that Doug Sax used, seemed to be in fairly bad health. I would hope that Herb would have taken the most care with his master tapes, even more than any other artist who owns their own master tapes?

Great to see this thread alive.

I'm curious why Steve recommends the original Polydor "Layla". I heard it once and was really put off by it, especially the buzzing during "Have You Ever Loved A Woman".
