The slow movement of the Beethoven is lovely.

The Mendelssohn is a delight start to finish.

I have that set, along with the (reportedly) superior earlier recordings on two Sony Masterworks 2CD sets. I have yet to compare the two.

I got a bunch of Bruckner today, mostly 7ths (Barenboim, Bohm, Celibadache, Furtwangler, HvK Vienna). Also a 4th & 8th by HvK. Three 9ths (Barenboim, Wand, HvK).

So far, the 1st movement of the 7th by Celibadache has drawn me in the most (I'm listening blindly on iTunes, on shuffle).

It is my favorite so far. Thanks for recommending it. (You and someone else, right?)

i have the Bruckner 9.gave it a listen yesterday & plan to play it again soon.
to me Walter's work has a certain mellowness but is still forceful enough for
    my taste.

RRB, I am not so willing to spend $50 on a CD. I guess these Esoteric CD's are the equivalent of those MoFi records, remember those?

I've been listening to classical music casually my entire life. Now that I'm beginning to take a more active interest in the music, I've just made my first conscious effort at comparing different recordings of the same work.

I heard Holst's "The Planets" for the first time a couple of weeks ago when I purchased:

I immediately fell in love with the music and listened to it about another 5 times. However, not wanting this recording to be imprinted on me, I researched on these threads other good recordings of this work and ended up purchasing this recording last night based on your recommendations:

I've only listened to it once so it's too early for me to say which I prefer, but I already see the benefit of comparing different recordings of the same work as a means of gaining further appreciation of a work that you like. I may also end up purchasing this one and then (hopefully) calling it a day:
