(I am talking about various artists compilations here) I am a huge collector from the historical angle and researched this subject for years and years. What are some songs you used to hear on pop/mainstream radio yet never appeared on any various CD compilations? You are allowed to include a particular version if you want as in a "full length album version", "single radio mix", etc. that eluded you.

    I know of a few:

    Tommy Shaw "Girls With Guns"

    Greg Guidry "Goin' Down"

    Eddie Schwartz "All Are Tomorrows"

    Tane Cain "Holdin' On"

Sonny Charles "Put It In A Magazine"

    John Hunter "Tragedy"

Wet Willie "Weekend" (full length album version over 6 minutes)

Morris Day "Fishnet" (full length album version over 6 minutes)

Chris Christian "I Want You, I Need You"

    Charlie "It's Inevitable"

All of these made the top 40 U.S. pop charts (many scraping the bottom of the top 40, but nonetheless), yet never appeared on any compilations in their full version splendor.

A great 5 CD series by Rhino in the 90s called "Radio Daze" went after these types of songs, yet excluded these in the sets (songs like "Sweetheart" by Franke & the Knockouts albeit an edit, "Hot Rod Hearts" by Robbie Dupree, etc. were included in the series). Another good series is the 2 disc set "Barry Scott presents the Lost 45s". He only uses single versions, however they sound great and include some real gems!

What are some other rare songs that you were stunned to find never appeared on a compilation anywhere and you either had to track down the full length or live without?

I buy very few VA comps but I do look at the song lists a bit. Some from the late '80's that I like that I don't think I've ever seen are:

    - Double - "The Captain Of Her Heart"
    - Johnny Hates Jazz - "Shattered Dreams"
    - Icehouse - "Electric Blue"

There is a great five-volume series of 80's music called "Living in Oblivion"

    Captain is on vol 5
    Shattered Dreams on vol 3

Electric Blue is on a Time-Life comp called "Sounds of the Eighties, Late 80's, Take Two". I don't have it so I can't comment on the sound quality

I had a feeling I was going to be proven wrong on all three accounts, but not that quickly! Been meaning to check out the Living In Obilivion series for a while. Perhaps it's now time.

Eye To Eye - "Nice Girls"
    Jim Capaldi - "That's Love"
Robin Gibb - "Boys Do Fall In Love"
Glass Moon - "On A Carousel"
    Neilsen/Pearson - "Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore"
Jim Photoglo - "Fool In Love With You"
    Suave - "My Girl"
Cliff Richard - "A Little Bit More"
Meco - "Pop Goes The Movies, Pt. 1"
Robbie Patton - "Don't Give It Up"

There are a lot more that have only appeared on one comp and are thus hard to find, as well as hundreds of hits that have never appeared in their correct 45 versions on CD.

Great list! A few more that only showed up on one compilation:

Gary Wright "Really Wanna Know You" (the TV only comp called "Sweet Love")

Lindsey Buckingham "Trouble" (CD called "Rock FM")

Lindsey Buckingham "Go Insane" (CD called "Sounds of the Eighties 1983-1985")

My original submission was also to mention "Living In Oblivion".

So I am going to mention Cheryl Ladd's "Think It Over" just for the fun of it.

That's a crime if Shattered Dreams isn't on a comp.

As mentioned above, it's on Living in Oblivion vol 3.

It's on at least a dozen other comps as well.

Just out of curiosity, what's the difference on this one? I've got the US Casablanca 45 but I'd mainly been used to hearing the song via an MP3 I downloaded (god knows where from or from what disc it was sourced), and I didn't really notice any major difference when I spun and 'dropped the 45 the other night.
