A few months ago I bought myself a copy of Lee Morgan's 'Candy'. The original blue note's are rather expensive and thats why I bought me a Japanese King copy of the eighties. I had other Kings before who were great vinyls! But thats old news. I only know that this copy had a flaw in the pressings or sound mixing stages... On the first song I'm hearing a sort of wheelspinning from time to time or a noise that I can't recall... So a bug in this King record...
This week I bought myself the Candy CD (The RVG edition) and what do you think.... again the same noise.... grrrr. I have a subscription on the MM 45rpm series but this album has yet to be delivered. Could anybody tell me what that noise is, and if Steve & his team solved that problem on the 45rpm reissue?!
I am not a musician but I thought it could be a noise of an instrument handling, although I asked myself why RVG couldnt reduce the noise when recording...?

    A bump for you!

You're a hoot Michel, I thought there was an actual insect pressed into the vinyl at the pressing plant , laughing with you not at you buddy. Sorry I can't help out on this problem, thanks for the chuckle :righton:

Squeaky hi hat. Lots of vintage jazz recordings, Blue Note and otherwise, have this sound. Don't see why it's such a big deal personally but it drives some people nuts.

It bothers me too when I hear it...go listen to The Changling by The Doors if you want to hear more squeaks. I've never understood how sounds like that weren't caught by the engineer or the producer at the time.

When I concentrate on the squeaky hi-hat pedal on this record it drives me batty. Loudest I've ever heard one.

This is the perfect example, I was about to mention. Once you "find it" in the mix, you can't unhear it.

Sorry guys...but Prestige and Blue Note never paid me squat! Can't afford oil...

    Drummers don't make diddly...

Maybe they better did not used the hi-hat for that recording...

Does anybody knows if Steve & Kevin add some oil to the hi-hat before pressing the 45rpm's issue....?

No the noise is on the 45 rpm...it's on the tapes...no way to remove it without screwing up the music...I guess you guys only go to live shows where everyone and everything in the background is completely and utterly silent???

And why do people (not me) buy 1000$ cartridges to play vinyl....?
So you hear the squeaky hi-hat better ?

It's a pitty but I find it too...

Bass drum pedals often squeak too.

This stuff was so common back then no one even noticed it or attempted to fix it!

That squeak drives me crazy too. Luckily, it's only on one track. The same thing happens to a lesser extent on one track of Kenny Drew's "Undercurrent" on Blue Note. There's an OJC CD out there that has an annoying squeak but I can't remember which one.

The problem with noticing something like that is that you notice it every time you hear the song/album. A surprising number of jazz albums have out of tune pianos...among other flaws.

I just listened this morning and didn't hear it.

    Which track is it again...?

If Steve and Kevin had a time machine I'm sure they could find better uses for it
