Since I'm really enjoying Europe '72 and Volume 2 I'm thinking of picking up a few individual shows from dead.net. In particular I'm really loving Brown Eyed Women, Cumberland Blues, China Cat Sunflower, The Other One and, of course, Dark Star.

What are your favorite/the best 5 shows?

April 7 – Wembley Empire Pool, London, England
April 8 – Wembley Empire Pool, London, England
April 11 – Newcastle City Hall, Newcastle upon Tyne, England
April 14 – Tivoli Concert Hall, Copenhagen, Denmark
April 16 – Stakladen, Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark
April 17 – Tivoli Concert Hall, Copenhagen, Denmark
    April 21 – Beat-Club, Bremen, West Germany
April 24 – Rheinhalle, Düsseldorf, West Germany
April 26 – Jahrhundert Halle, Frankfurt, West Germany
April 29 – Musikhalle, Hamburg, West Germany
May 3 – Olympia Theatre, Paris, France
May 4 – Olympia Theatre, Paris, France
May 7 – Bickershaw Festival, Wigan, England
May 10 – Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, Netherlands
May 11 – Grote Zaal De Doelen, Rotterdam, Netherlands
May 13 – Lille Fairgrounds, Lille, France
May 16 – La Grande Salle Du Grand Theatre, Luxembourg, Luxembourg

I've pretty much eliminated April 14 and May 26 from my choices as I already have a good chunk of these shows on Europe '72 and Volume 2.

This should be close. Pretty consistent playing throughout.

I'm just going to limit myself to 10, haven't decided which ones yet.

I'd still get 5/26 to get that whole jam uncut without the overdubs (I'm assuming what's there is sans overdubs)

I'm skipping on 4/7 and 4/8 since the centerpieces of those shows were released on Steppin' Out. If you don't have Steppin Out, I highly suggest you make 4/8 one of your picks.

Also skipping on 4/26 since the bulk is on Hundred Years Hall, but if I didn't already have it, I'd get that show as well.

You should put Grateful Dead in the topic line since not everybody knows what this is about. Or at least one person didn't.

Good point. I totally missed that.

I voted for just Rotterdam 5-11-72 for the longest Darkstar,
    while on the same day:
    2) Edgar Broughton Band - Playhouse Theatre, London 5-11-72
    3) Gila - WDR, Koln, Germany 2-26-72
    4) Van Der Graaf Generator - Bresica, Italy 5-21-72
    5) Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Playhouse Theatre, London 2-12-72

Presumably that person would be asking 'what's Europe '72?' and have nothing to contribute ;-) Good idea btw. Grateful Dead in the title would be very useful for searches.

Yeah, presumably. Lot's of things happened in Europe in 1972. Some GD shows were hardly among the most important.

Maybe a GORT can change the title so then we can get on with the thread instead of needless bitching.

I thought this was going to be about a lot of different bands playing in Europe that year. Really, how in the world would anyone look at a thread title like this and know what it is about?

If this were posted to a Grateful Dead forum, there wouldn't have been the "needless bitching". Obviously we're all on the same wavelength as you and should have known exactly what this thread was about. I mean, who else in 1972 mattered, right?

Really, no idea? Did you even skim the previous 10 or so posts?

I will be happy to PM a Gort so we can move on.

Acknowledged. I would think for most people here it's kinda obvious but definitely worth clarifying. I don't agree that the shows should be classified as 'hardly among the most important'.

In fairness, I imagine there are many people who still haven't got through enough of those shows yet to vote. :)

I mean, those concerts were massive - something like double or even triple CD-length?

I too am listening to Europe 72 and Vol II. I am really liking Playing in the Band with it's middle jam section. Also, I didn't know it was Pigpen who originally sang "Good Lovin'" and it also had a middle section too.

Other songs, I really prefer the Skull & Roses versions like Bertha, Me & My Uncle, etc.

I realize I may have done the poll a tad too soon after the release. At this point I'm thinking most have, hopefully, listened to enough of the shows to vote.

4-7-72 was my pick for the best - primarily because of the set list.

I'm personally a fan of the 4-26 show found on Hundred Year Hall. Best version of "The Other One" I've ever heard.

Tough call...4/24 and 4/26 are two I'd put right at the top..

4/7 is the most surprising..a great show top to bottom! Even better then 4/8 as a whole show IMO. (Though 4/8's big jam can't be beat!)
