Now playing CD2 from the following set for a first listen. I had high expectation for this Hildegard set and was not disappointed. CD1 was excellent ...

I only have one but I find the performance to be very expressive and really enjoyable. It's played by Lynn Harrell, on Decca.

A four-hand arrangement of Agon! That would have been really good to hear.

I've got this amazing two piano transcription on CD of Bartok's Miraculous Mandarin (think it actually might be his original, because the orchestral version as we know it only took shape after years of revisions) - the relatively monochrome nature of the piano really brings out its crunching dissonances, in some of the most advanced music written by anyone at the time (with the exception of Schoenberg and co and Ives).

I have about 10 versions of these works. Is Lynn Harrell still with the NYPO?

I believe the Agon arrangement was done by Stravinsky for the ballet rehearsals. I didn't care for it. I think the work needs the orchestral color.
(The ballet itself, of course, is spectacular.)

The principal cellist for the NYPO is Carter Brey.

As a composer I find that kind of thing very useful and interesting though if you want to study the score on a purely musical basis (similar to the Bartok), especially when learning about the kind of harmony and chords Stravinsky used.

The original orchestral score is nigh on impossible to read, with half the parts transposing instruments or written for different clefs, but of course you'd need to study that as well to become well versed on modern orchestration.

Greetings all! Taking the plunge to post on this thread after being a longtime lurker............I was listening to this Medieval music record today

and decided to look up some info on the woman listed as the producer : Isabella Wallich. Right away the last name caught my attention (me thinking a connection to the famous Wallich's record store maybe?). Here's her obit from the UK Telegraph:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/1314015/Isabella-Wallich.html

Wow! What an amazing person. She has an autobiography published:

    http://www.amazon.com/Recording-My-Life-Isabella-Wallich/dp/1860743277

I'm relatively new to being a classical buff - maybe her story is already old hat? Pretty impressive life nonetheless. Has anyone read her book? Cheers!

I believe Lynn Harrell was with the NYPO at some point. I rarely attended performances by the NYPO and last attended its concert in 97 ...

Considering how much I like this composer, I'm embarrassed to admit this is the first time through these pieces for me.

Well, you're remedying any deficiency there in the right way. That's truly a classic disc. Your posting the recording locations made me look up the Broadwood Hotel in Philly, as I'd never heard of it -- sure enough, it was knocked down before I moved here. Too bad.
