I'm sure there is a thread somewhere on this topic, but I did a couple of searches and couldn't locate any.

Here are some of the ones that keep me coming back for repeated spins:

Prince - "Erotic City," "Mountains," "Pop Life," "Lets Work," and "I Wish you Heaven."

Echo & The Bunnymen - "Lips Like Sugar" and "Never Stop" (discoteque).

The The - "Uncertain Smile" and "Perfect" (also "Dogs of Lust" but that is from 1992 so it can't count)

The Cure - "In Between Days"

    New Order - "Temptation"

Art of Noise - "Close to the Edit"

Happy Mondays - "WLF (Think About the Future)"

What are some of your favorite 1980s 12"/extended remixes?

I've always quite liked the extended mixes of Cities In Dust and Dazzle by Siouxsie and the Banshees and prefer these to the original versions - they're both included as bonus tracks on the current cds of the respective parent albums.

Having an extensive collection of the things, the one which stands out as the absolute pinnacle of the genre - totally overblown, and glorious - is Two Tribes (Annihilation) from Frankie Goes To Hollywood.

Is was inescapable for the whole summer of '84: you heard it at every party, everywhere.

I was playing it just this weekend, still sounds amazing.

"Nasty" by Janet Jackson. The version that was out when Control came out.

"The Killing Moon" by Echo and the Bunnymen. This also had the awesome live version of "Do It Clean" on the b-side

The Dance Mix of Sledgehammer was stupendous. So too was the 12" mix of McCartney's Pretty Little Head. Awesome.

It's a shame this wasn't a bonus track on the box set that came out a few years back.

Everybody Wants to Rule the World [Urban Mix]/Tears for Fears
Enjoy the Silence [Hands and Feet Mix]/Depeche Mode (this technically came out in 1990)
    Electric Blue [Extended Version]/Icehouse
    Land of Confusion [Extended Version]/Genesis
    Behind the Wheel/Route 66 [Megamix]/Depeche Mode

And probably my all-time favorite from that era:
    No Promises [Extended Dance Mix]/Icehouse

I remember "Bizzare Love Triangle" being the one New Order song a Detroit radio station (96.3 maybe?) still played throughout the 90's, and it was always the Shep Pettibone extended remix. I remember finally getting a copy of Brotherhood and being surprised that the "real" version was so different.

    A few more:
I Get Weak [Extended Version]/Belinda Carlisle
Left to My Own Devices/Pet Shop Boys (while not labeled as a 12" mix, all of the versions from the Introspective album are considered 12" versions)
Proud to Fall [Long Night's Journey Mix]/Ian McCulloch

Plus New Order? They had some awesome 12"s back in the day although it's hard to tell what would be considered the remix and what would be the "original" in some cases.

Is that the same remix as on Substance? That is my preferred version.

I had a friend a long time ago who would cue up two LP copies of BLT via a mixer and vary the speed on the turntables. The result was the surreal version that would blow your mind during the intro!

There is a 'proper' 12" single of Left To My Own Devices, runs about 10 minutes, but in my opinion the version on Introspective is better.

The 80s were a great period for remixes - by the time we got to the 90s, most became dominated by repetitive "club beats" and were much less interesting. (Gaga's had some creative, interesting remixes, though.)

Big Country produced some of my faves. All of their remixes were good, but I especially liked:

    -"East of Eden"
    -"Look Away"
    -"Just a Shadow"
    -"Wonderland"

Yep, that one. I wonder if this was in the last days before Clear Channel owned everything. But I remember being mesmerized by it amidst all the grunge and britpop 15-year old me was surrounded by in '95-'96.

Imagine being 15 when the song/remix first came out. It was mind blowing! :)

I'm with you on the Prince except you left out my favorites -- Shockadelica, Hello and Girl. All 12-inch b-sides, all extended from the 7-inch b-sides often with extra verses and guitar solos.

Also The Cure's Fascination Street (much cleaner mix than the album version) and a British vinyl only Pictures of You that's not on any CD I've found. Alison Moyet's 12-inch remix of Invisible is also incredible.
