Did anybody get this box set, and if so how's the sound quality?

The sound quality is superb. Best Spector ever on CD, bar none.

Top notch, both sound and presentation.

 

If you do get this set,be aware that some tracks are repeated,and two are almost the same Lp (Crystals)...Other than those minor things,the sound is awesome!The best Philles Collection around!

Should Be getting mine soon,looks like the japanese one has bigger box with the right
size mini sleeves,saw the cheaper(Money that is) American one andthey are back
at it making the minis the wrong size ,at least that's what it looks like
wonder how much they save making those crappy mini's like the ones in the miles
or Tony Bennett set,if they only made them the right size you could fit a inner sleeve
and the cds wouldn't put out like the US Simon and Garfunkel ones

Is the SQ not the same as that in the recent remasters Be My Baby: The Very Best of The Ronettes and Da Doo Ron Ron: The Very Best of The Crystals ?

It's absolutely essential. This is how the Wall of Sound is supposed to be. Light years ahead of the awful sounding Back to Mono box set.

 

Really? And does it contain everything on BACK TO MONO?

 

Nope. Why would it? It's an album collection - not a singles collection.

Legacy's other five Spector CD compilations are singles-oriented.

 

But the sound quality on the new box is similar to that on the other recent Sony Spector remasters like Wall of Sound and Essential?

 

Indeed it is. Vic Anesini really understands The Wall and knows exactly how to get maximum impact from the tapes. The acid test for Spector is how it holds up when blasted, and all Anesinis efforts are mindblowing when cranked!

 

I love his Presley Remasterings! They're perfect! And this set is great,too! Spector's Philles-Labeled Lp's never sounded better! Also,try the Legacy comp "The Essential Phil Spector",too..BTW,was that also remastered by Anesini as well?

 

Thanks. I'm going to stick with Wall of Sound and Essential. I think Phil's characterization of the Philles albums as two hit tracks and ten filler tracks is pretty accurate for the albums in the box, which is why I didn't buy them when they could be had on vinyl at Sam Goody's for $2.99 each.
Now, start dipping into the archives for rare stuff such as that on the old UK vinyl Rare Masters collections, stereo mixes and outtakes and I'm there.

 

That indeed is the ultimate test. Crank up previous CD's and they are grating and shrill. Kick up the volume on the Philles 45's and you can shake the walls without ear fatigue. The Anesini remasters are much closer to those 45's than any previous CD's.

 

I have actually been quite surprised by the quality of some of that 'filler'. Obviously there is nothing that matches the likes of Be My Baby and Walk in the Rain but there is some worthwhile material. I find The Ronettes album to be pretty much free of filler; that is an exceptional ALBUM.

 

Yes. And it's quite wrong anyhow to dismiss Phil Spector as a follower of the industry standard for Top 40 LPs back then. Nor did he run sessions to create or fill out tracks for an album after the Paris Sisters fiasco.

The Ronettes album comes nowhere near being "2 Hits + Filler": almost every track was meticulously recorded as a potential hit single. And that's how Phil Spector recorded in the 60s. He simply wasn't into making or selling albums per se, and when an LP was needed it was just a matter of collecting hits and tracks which didn't meet his exacting criteria for a 45 release.

 

Good to know. I'm rethinking getting the box. The two new best-of collections are great.

Exactly-it's been a revelation to someone like me, who was a bit of a fence-sitter when it came to Spector's "classic" work--it sounds tremendous. It's good to hear stuff that I don't know and the hits which I had grown weary of due to overexposure sound new and fresh.

At these prices it's a real bargain, and brisk sales can only make a case for more properly-mastered Spector!

The worst-case scenario of course is gettin' soaked on Ebay if the box goes suddenly OOP!
