I have no interest in box sets or bonus tracks. Redbook CD only, please. Thank you for voting.

It's not listed in your poll, but I would vote for the original EG CD.

You've skipped way too many other options.

2004 "Original Master Edition" all the way.

The 1999 edition has the first side mastered from a 2nd gen copy of the master tape (side 2 is from the master)

The 2004 edition has the first side mastered from the original uncrossfaded mixdown tapes, which back in the day had to be bounced to another tape to crossfade them (the original master)

Since the crossfading can be done digitally these days, on the 2004 edition side one is a whole generation better than even the original UK pressing.

On CD it's 2004 or bust, but vinyl is still the best option.

Wow, that surprises me. I had that one but flung it into the trash can as soon as I bought and heard the 30th Anniversary edition (which I haven't owned in years). No offense intended as we all have our preferences.

This is great information. I love when someone explains why they feel a certain version sounds better than another.

Is this the 2004 "OME" which you favor?

Well I was wondering why you didn't include the 40th anniversary edition, this post explains why.

Shame the much improved version of Moonchild only appears on that box set...

Subquestion: why is this album always on a different label when a new CD comes out?

Agreed. When Fripp and Co. finally got hold of the master for both sides, the sound quality spoke for itself. A near perfect record now restored.

Finding a pinkie Island or a pink rim with the original cut is a treasure.

The original pre-1989 "Marketed By Jem Records Inc" cd on EG sounds the best.

Correct, the best IMHO, is not an available option.

The restoration on the DVD-A disc is a revelation. Fripp was able to go back to the original tracks, not the mix-downs, removing one or more generations of tape copy. This is one of those discs that makes it worthwhile to go out and spend 50-100 bucks on a used DVD-A/SACD player, no need to be myopic.

The original EG CD should have been included even though its sounds like a a 4th generation LP master was used!

Good call. That should have been included as well. It's interesting to hear the album in such a new light.

If you read the posts in this entire thread, you will see that others agree with me as well. The tape source used for the transfer may not have been the best, but to me, the original EG mastering is much warmer and smoother than any of the later CD issues. That being said, my favorite version of "In The Court Of The Crimson King" is my original German Island LP.

why is the 2010 Steve Wilson version not listed? Disc 1 of the 2 disc set is a redbook CD. IMO, a 2 disc set hardly constitutes a box set.

Which is another vote for the EG, since I believe it has been confirmed to be the same.

I have the 32VD and like it, but I also like the 30th.

I like Wilson's version. But it is a remix. Maybe we're dealing with the original mix only?

I don't think I'd rank it above the options listed anyway, although that 2004 versions is really quite bright to my ears, so it might be better than that. I haven't compared them directly.

It is a remix and a good one at that, I think it's tops.
