I was just wondering if there are still CD players made for $300 or less that will decode HDCDs? I am happy with my current Sony CD player, but it doesn't decode HDCD.

Thanks BradOlson. I should have said, I am not interested in a changer, I had one for a little bit and it scratched my discs. I just want a single disc player, since I can only listen to one disc at a time, anyway.

  4. Grab a used Oppo player. IIRC, all the Oppo players decode HDCD.

You will have track down a single disc player at a pawn shop, thrift shop, etc.

Lots of inexpensive DAC's decode HDCD. I have an X-Dac which should be under $100 now and still sounds good.

I'm also interested in an HDCD player. Used looks like the best option, but a DAC with HDCD decoding is a wise advice from beep. It also takes less space

You can get a used Emotiva ERC-1 or -2 for that used. It's not much more brand new either.

Music Hall CD-25 does HDCD, assuming the used market.

Doesn't NAD make one that is $300 USD retail?

Not off the top of my head but I know the MF's do, and the old Audio Alchemy ones too. A quick look on e bay or Audigon should show others.

Try to see if you can get a new Denon DCM 390 5 disc CD changer for under $300.00. It does HDCD.

The OP doesn't want a changer.

I would suggest a used Oppo 970HD. I'm sure it can be had for $100 or less, and it covers most of the bases:

    CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD Video, DVD+R, DVD-Audio, DVD-R DL, DVD-RW, HDCD, Picture CD, SACD
