On a very short list for my very favorite rock-ish album is
Strictly Personal ( Captain Beefheart). Admittedly my taste
may run to the crank side. But what can't be denied is that this
record sounds positively awful. I own copy of the original vinyl
and it really does sound awful beyond my ability to understand.
Yet I love this record above all others.
Do you have any album with cringe-worthy sound, yet you love
so much that you DON'T cringe when listening. You don't feel like
you love it inspite of the bad sound, you just embrace
the sound in all its awfulness because of your love of the performance?

The first two Silver Jews EPs, recorded on a crappy tape deck in a bedroom.

Daniel Johnston's output would go in this category, too. Not sure I would want to hear these in good quality.

    King Crimson's Earthbound

The Islands-era incarnation of Crimson was positively skrokin' a live setting, and the hideous sub-bootleg sound gives the proceedings a unique ambiance.

First one that comes to mind is TIM by The Replacements. it's one of my favorite records of all time, but hated the sound of it then, and still hate it now....Come to think of it,most of their catalog sounds like crap, but I think Hootenanny somehow transcends that a little bit.

yep, Roger Taylor's drums sounds like he is in the broom closet. But my fave Queen album, and pobably in my top 50 of all time.

Another to add - Bat Out of Hell by Meatlof. My Oz pressing has no bass at all, so bright it makes your ears bleed.

Wings Over America. Has no mid range. But a great album.

Yessongs....after the 1-2-3 punch of the great sounding studio albums preceding it, it sounds like a mess, but love it,none the less...

First album that I can remember buying that sounded dreadful was Kiss' Hotter Than Hell when I was about 10 years old. I thought there must be something wrong with the vinyl itself but came to learn that all of the HTH pressings sounded dreadful. The Who's A Quick One comes to mind also. Recently bought a reissue of an obscure hard proto prog album by Arcadium, Breathe Awhile, that sounds a bit rough. The Church's Forget Yourself also leaves a lot to be desired. All great music though, love them all..

Back in the 70's, I just pretended Yessongs was a decent sounding bootleg, and I enjoyed it a lot more.

Kiss' Hotter Than Hell was the first that came to mind...then just about everything by Guided By Voices, up through Under The Bushes Under The Stars.

Grand Funk Railroad- the "red album"- drums and bass sound alright, but Farners' guitar ? whoa....especially that wah-wah sound on "Paranoid"...yikes!
    Somehow, I still like it...
