Here in New England I know several families named Benoit. All of them pronounce it Ben oyt.

  2. Yes, Marc Benoit is pronounced with the c pronounced as in the American Mark, and Benoit pronounced buh-NWAH. I didn't live in Paris for 27 years for nothing!

Am 100% with you on this but typically anglophones will pronounce buu as boo or even bou anyway and unless linguists, won't appreciate what buu/bü is conveying.

I really need to go and have long lie-down as am getting everything back to front today. Perhaps it's Monday.

Right, lets try again. Yes, the wine is Chateau D'Yquem. The French, somewhat oddly, DROP the d' in common speech, why, I know not. Am sure those in the Bordelais do not, but those with a fleeting knowledge of the Grands Vins refer to it as Chateau Yquem.

MDR is LOL in French. «mort de rire».

    I'll get my coat.

  10. See how linguistically corrupted we can get? I didn't even know that either!..

    • BJR = bonjour = hi
    • BSR = bonsoir = have a good night, hi (in the evening)
    • SLT = salut
    • MDR = mort(e) de rire = LOL
    • JTM = je t'aime = I love you (I'm in love with you)
    • MSG = un message = message
    • PK = pourquoi? = why?
    • QQC = quelque chose = something
    • QQ1 = quelqu'un = someone
    • BZ = bisous, bises = kisses

Fascinating - thanks for sharing! I'm from Cardiff and when we did our PCH road trip a few years ago, we had to pay a visit here... trust me I'd take that weather all day, every day and twice on Sundays...:D

The baroque composer "Händel" is indeed pronounced like "Han Dul" written in English phonetic letters, with emphasis on the first syllable. The "a" is shorter than in "handle", and the "l" is of course pronounced in the German /French / Italian way.

  16. Is Stravinsky's "Baiser de la fée" using an old fashioned word for kiss?

  17. It's not old fashioned.

  18. A French name that totally threw me was Quesnel - didn't expect it would essentially be pronounced "kennel".

  19. Or the ever-helpful at record fairs "Donnez-moi ce disque des Beatles ou je vais vous tuer, connard!"

If it's Chris Benoit, the correct pronunciation is Vahl-de-mort.

I would say you pronounce it however the owner of the name wishes it pronounced :)

Let us not forget former NBA "legend" Benoit Benjamin who pronounced it Benoynt.

Yeah, Pennsylvania is full of those Welsh names. My mailing address up there used to be "North Wales", which I thought was neat being a fan of THE PRISONER which of course was filmed in the north of Wales. Another coincidence is that the American head of "Six Of One", the official Prisoner Appreciation Society, also lived in that community, just a mile or so up the road from me. We met up once when I joined the organization for a year - he worked one building away from me in Bala-Cynwyd, PA!

  25. Ah, of course the French would inevitably have many different words for 'kiss'! :)
