Just caught this last night. Figured it would be cause to reissue the out-of-print MPI dvds. While watching it, I thought I noticed clips that weren't on the dvds. When they hit the pledge segment, they're offering a 4 disc set featuring performances never before on dvd (I think they're asking $150 for it). Damn! I love those MPI discs and would love to see futher volumes. But, this was just a clip show. $150 is a big bite for something I probably have a majority of. Sometimes the PBS premiums get a commercial release. I'll decide my purchase at that point for I highly doubt we'll see complete episodes again anytime soon.

Well, PBS isn't going to tell you if they will get a commercial release in the future, they need your $150. I have the 1st 3 of the 4 MPI dvds, so unless the new clips are really awesome and of artists I like, I'm not biting on the new set at any price. Usually, these type of dvds do get released commercially at a later date, though.

Such a shame that there's only 3 color episodes still existing. The rest are pretty bad kinescopes.

From what I have read Hullabaloo's color video tape masters were another victim of the genius at NBC
that thought those old shows were taking up too much room in the warehouses. Along with Johnny Carson's Tonight Shows, and who knows what else.
Really short sighted and heart breaking.

Two thousand 90-minute 2" tapes did take up a ton of room. In Carson's case, he was extremely bitter about it, because he said many times, "if I had known there was a storage problem, I would've been glad to spend $1000 a month to keep the tapes in a private storage building somewhere else." His beef was, they didn't even ask him -- they just threw them away. And contrary to most opinions, the tapes were thrown away, not reused, because most of them were old brown-oxide tapes that wouldn't work well for reuse.

Well, there's physical evidence that even if the tapes had been retained, only a fraction of the shows would have survived. I've spoken with someone who has a color quad tape reel that was used for the Carson's "Tonight Show" in the 60s, and the markings on it indicate that it was in re-used through one week (for each succeeding night's show), was then re-used for another NBC program entirely, and was then retired from service, with the last-recorded program on it. Unfortunately, the new program ran so long that it totally erased whatever remnants of the "Tonight Show" might have been on it.

Someone told me years ago that for many network daily series that were videotaped, there are an unusual number of Friday episodes that exist... :(

The NBC tape op I knew, who worked there from about 1972-1992, told me they did, in fact, have all the individual shows and did not erase them as they went on. But I'm going by his word -- I haven't seen any proof beyond that.

They did dual-record the show for a long time, so there was not only a primary recording but also a backup as well, and it was rare that they stopped to do any edits. It was essentially a "live on tape" show, which is also how Merv Griffin did his show (when I worked at Merv's company TAV in the early 1980s).

I don't doubt there were news shows and game shows that were considered "throwaways," and there's a ton of network-owned game shows that no longer exist -- probably for the "reusability" problem you site. But in Carson's case, they did do some major "Best of" compilations later on, and for that, you'd really need all the shows in order for that to work -- not just the Friday show.
