As for Columbia Symphony Orhestra (of Walter recordings), it is strongly recommended to buy the 80's non remaster (pre SBM) CDs.

Same mastering for sure. And super cheap. What else to ask for?

Are you sure? The Walter edition CDs are a serious improvement over these 80s you mention, to these ears of course. I have compared a bunch of them (the int'l reissues; unless you are talkin' for japanese ones with different remastering).

Seconded. The titles released on Odyssey were especially bad.

To the best of my knowledge, the 80's Sony/Columbia CDs are digitally identical, mastered by J.McClure. Among them the JPN early pressings are the best sonically but the others are no slouch.
And to my opinion, the McClure mixes of Walter smoke every later reissue.

I have the stereo Mozart recordings and the Bruckner and they sound strident.

I also have the McClure Beethoven. To date I have made only the briefest comparison of those with the new box set, but I preferred the recent ones.

Are you saying less strident on the SBM reissue?

Beautiful sound and, from what I recall, early digital. I think my copy may be a Japanese manufactured disc.

Listened again to Mata's Stravinsky/Firebird recording. Among the most powerful bass whack's I've heard.

I was using strident specifically with respect to the Odyssey releases. The Odyssey Mozart recordings are different than the Mozart in the box, so the only overlap I have Odyssey vs. box is Bruckner's 9th. I have not done a comparison.

Late analog according to the booklet that came with the Mozart cycle box set.

I'll have to check my discs, which are packed away since we flooded in my listening room. Very nice regardless, but your explanation makes the most sense.

My Naxos Wit collection is meager. I'm on a road of discovery, so I can't give you a large list. However, here are three I enjoy, and I believe are respectable performances.

I intend on ordering more soon, especially Wit's acclaimed Penderecki releases.

My favorite "recording" is Zinman's, mostly due to Tony Faulkner's sound. He apparently talked the producer into going to a better venue for sound. As far as performance, I'd put Anton Nanut's at the top. His vocalist is even sweeter (to me) than Dawn Upshaw, and that's saying a lot.

I was on a Naxos kick for awhile and Wit is certainly a fine conductor. I especially enjoy his Prokofiev discs quite a bit. Here's one: http://www.amazon.com/Prokofiev-Piano-Concertos-Nos-Sergey/dp/B0000013U1

It's great and you won't have a lot of overlap. It's mostly classical period and earlier. Most of it is baroque and earlier. I already owned a few of the discs, but for at least half of the box, I had no discs for the composer.

Recently I listened to many (20+) reordings of Mahler 9th symphony. And, to my surprise as well, the very best was the Walter stereo recording both sonically and interpretationwise. My copy is the Sony first pressing 64DC. I prefer it over the Columbia 6 eye vinyl which lacks the space-ness and the bass that the CD has.

Real sorry to hear about the diabetes. Hope the music makes up for it in a small part.
