To me, Rick Nelson was an earlier rock and roll artist and in 1963 or 64, his take on "The Very Thought Of You" would have been considered a rock and roll record, but not so much these days. With that said, the longer LP version of the song has a "cha, cha, cha" ending, while the original DECCA 45 did not, as it faded just before the cold "cha, cha, cha" ending!

The important question: is there a single use of "cha cha cha" post 1970 that wasn't ironic? :D

The original version of "Little Darlin'" by The Gladiolas (later, Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs). The recording by the Diamonds is a cover.

The Beatles carefully avoided the "cha cha cha" that"Till There Was You" called for.

The Texas brand Brave Combo has been doing crowd pleasing, amped up versions of songs with international dance rhythms including cha cha and polka for more than 20 years. It would be easy to dismiss this as ironic, mostly because it's so much fun, but they really do love this stuff and are serious about it. They backed Tiny Tim on his last record.

I don't think he's referring to the actual syllables, but the rhythm.

Hah! Thanks for this wonderful track. Completely off subject, but I've been trying to remember this group for days. Another thread I posted about groups like this one that would put out a few classic tracks each--other groups were The Exciters (think it was a thread on them), The Orlons. I know there are a few more. The Essex! Sigh. Think they also did the classic "A Walkin' Miracle".

The first song I thought of. I scrolled through the thread twice to make sure it hadn't been mentioned.

"You'll Be Gone" (recorded 1962, released 1965 on Girl Happy soundtrack) is another one.

"Alvin's Harmonica" by David Seville & the Chipmunks (sort of, as the song fades out while the critters are singing "cha cha cha" repeatedly)
