Hey All--Long time listener, first time caller. The upcoming Sly Stone box set (http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/sly-and-the-family-stone-the-box-set.312544/) has me holding a personal Sly Stone festival in anticipation, and that's raised up the pre-existing question of which pre-Family Stone tracks I might be missing.

Most of the pre-Family Stone CD collections seem pretty disorganized, haphazard, and possibly of variable sound quality. I already have the excellent "Precious Stone" for 1963-65 and "Listen to the Voices" for 1965-70. I also have the possibly only semi-legal "Masters" (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00000DAKA) to try to fill in some of the holes that "Precious Stone" doesn't cover. There are a few repeats between the two albums (with Precious Stone always in better quality), but it also has some different/final versions of songs that appear as demos on "Precious Stone." Also, with these types of things (with the exception of Precious Stone" and "Listen to the Voices"), you have to be wary of songs that might not actually have any Sly involvement at all.

What's the best way to collect the "complete" pre-Family Stone tracks on CD? Ie, what are the other albums containing pre-Family Stone material that would be the best route / most essential for the completist? I'm looking to factor in both sound quality and as little duplication as possible (although I know some duplication is likely unavoidable if I want my collection to be truly complete). Much appreciated...these rogue releases can be a huge mess to sort out.. Thanks,

    - JohnGris

Besides the two ACE CDs, there isn't any real good cd out. Sly's pre family stone era is a big mess when it comes to cd releases.

Good thing is though, that there will be other CDs coming from ace to complete the whole overview, but for that you have to be patient.....

That's great news! I was hoping there would be a sequel to Listen to the Voices that picks up at 1970 throughout the 70s but I suppose Sly possibly didn't finish enough. But your post makes me think we'll get some more unreleased/rare Sly which is always a good thing.

It is great news. At the least, we'll get to see those pre-Family Stone tunes on a non-rogue release for once, with the best sound possible and some notes sorting everything out. I appreciate the reply and looking forward to it (patiently).

Besides Sly's own recording for Epic/Sony, there arnt that many finished songs that he recorded for other labels. A compilation of all his guest appearances from 1974 upwards would make a great set though....

Did he really not appear on anything from 1971-1973?

JohnGris, thanks for the tip about Masters.

I have been trying to fill in the blanks on the songs exclusive to Masters that are not on Precious Stone.

    Artist: Song Title (Songwriter)
?: In the Still of the Night (Fred Parris)
Sly: Buttermilk, Part 2 (Sylvester Stewart)
Miss Elsie Smith: Watermelon Man (Herbie Hancock/Jon Hendricks)
?: If You Were Blue (?)
Sly: Rock Dirge, Part 1 (or Parts 1 & 2?) (Sylvester Stewart)
Miss Elsie Smith: Hi Love (Alliar?/Lind?/Stone?)
The Viscaynes: You're My Only Love (?)
The Viscaynes: Heavenly Angel (Rickie Page/Earl Washington)
The Viscaynes: Oh What a Night (Marvin Junior/Johnny Funches)
The Viscaynes: You've Forgotten Me (Kenneth Bradley)
The Viscaynes: Yellow Moon (George Motola/Rickie Page)
    Female Singer ?: Honest (?)
The Viscaynes: A Long Time Alone (George Motola/Rickie Page)
The Viscaynes: Uncle Sam Needs You (My Friend) (H.B. Barnum)

    Corrections and/or Additions? :help:

Who wrote If You Were Blue, You're My Only Love, and Honest? Sly?
Also, who are Alliar and Lind that co-wrote Hi Love with Mr. Sly Stone?

Sly didnt write any of the miss elsie smith cuts. He was just a session player (bass)

Not sure about Honest, which was cut when Sly was at autumn, have to check my archive.

kiddfunkadelic, you are a valuable resource.
Thank you for sharing all of the Sly information through the years.
And Ace's Listen To The Voices is an excellent collection!

It's the different takes that I find fascinating.

Looking forward to more ACE Sly CDs...

Yes, i like them as well. gives you a look on how things took place in a time when bands still really recorded without any overdubs on the basic rhythm track.

The only thing strange about that CD is the voice overdub from the engineer.

He wasn't the guy who recorded the tracks back in January 1967. After obtaining the tapes, he released that CD in 1995 and overdubbed his comments on the audio.....

Also the liner notes are not correct. Again, check Listen To The voices for the real story behind those first demo tapes
