    In your opinion, obviously.

And which "audiophile music" is as bad as that?

And it's the OP's opinion that audio equipment dealers ''who may or may not be audiophiles'' have the worst taste in music, an opinion you and others are too eager to share.

You came out with a cheap and vague question that appeared to be designed to start an argument. My intent was to make your work for it. Mission accomplished.

I see, so it's ok for an audiophile to question someone's taste in music, but not ok for me to question that same audiophile's tastes, makes perfect sense.

Somewhat OT, have you seen the Youtube audiophile videos and some of the music chosen to show off speakers, amps etc.? Some of it is bad beyond belief.

nah it's true fairly often. Always bring music you like and are familiar with when you audition gear.

    An aside..

I saw Boogie Nights the week it came out with a dozen prep school friends. When Buck (Don Cheadle) opens his Super Stereo World in the denouement, to the perfectly utilized sounds of the Beach Boys 'God Only Knows', we all jumped up and cheered like mad. It's still my favorite film and really one of the greatest ever made. Thanks for the clip

I was just posting on The Jethro Tull Forum that I liked the original A Little Light Music CD compared to the remaster.

In the past I noticed a few dealers trying out Boz Scaggs Silk Degrees - demonstrations make me sleepy.

I recall selling an early Sherbourne 5x200 WPC amplifier to a customer after he sat through Nine In Nails Downward Spiral run through a Lexicon DC-& in the Logic Seven mode. I don't know what wahs more imprssive the, the sound quality, the volume the customer listened at or that the shop's owner let it go on for the length of the CD.

Personally I preferred to have customer bring their own tunes, but I tried not to demo the same old "audiohile" stuff.

I used to work for an audio-video dealer, and I was shocked by how rarely anyone brought their own music - not one in a hundred.

"is this system not capable of handling something more
    musical and dynamic"?

If they put female audiophile vocals on I walk.

At every single friggin' audiophile demo exhibition there were classical, jazz vocal and "elevator music"

When I say I'd like to listen to some classic rock, they use to say "that popular (yes, the pejorative term) music isn't well recorded, so it won't sound good on high end systems"

Bulls*** I don't want a super uber expensive gear just to listen to Diana Krall and Jacintha

What gets me is the deplorable condition of the records some shops have for demo's. Audiophile pressings, 180 & 200 grams, late 70's re-issues of certain classics, plus the odd assortment of original million sellers....leaning helter skelter against walls, lying flat on the carpet, outside their sleeves/covers, sometimes in the wrong cover...a loose inner sleeve with a boot print on it, folded over in a corner behind the door. Much of the vinyl lightly scuffed up and very dusty. egads.

Use the Lindsey Buckingham cd "Out Of The Cradle" as a demo disc. One damned fine sounding disc, if I do say so.

Oh God yeah. Pressings listed hear (AP, MFSL, Music Matters, not counting originals) are mostly incredible and demo worthy. Don't you want to hear both a great recording and performance? Light jazz, Casino Royale is the best you can do?

No!! I have no idea who the group was, but it was terrible!

That's The Absolute Sound editor Harry Pearson's fault.

I once heard "Lite jazz" as being the musical equivalent of various, reduced-calorie "lite" food products - lacking in calories. The calorie is a unit of heat, and by removing most of the calories from music, they had eliminated the heat.

I understand the frustration with the audiophile cliche music dominating audio shows. But put yourself in their shoes. what happens when a dealer puts on his or her favorite music that is not a stellar recording? Half the people who walk in may be familiar with the music (maybe less) and they understand what they are hearing. The rest walk in, hear unfamiliar music that doesn't sound as good as the guy next door playing the audiophile cliches and concludes the equipment isn't as good. I think their hand is forced. Ya gotta play excellent sounding recordings at those shows otherwise a lot of people will take away the wrong impression of the equipment.

Hmmm. It takes a lot of confidence in your product to use that harsh, cold album as a demo though. I'd be intrigued, and I'm assuming most of their market knows how the album sounds on other turntables. So how'd it sound?

If I could have found the video I would let you at least hear it on that, but as far as the vid goes, it was clearly a horrible choice, as I would assume they didn't intend for it to come across like that.. Again, it was most likely the USA connection they were going after, but to actually play the thing was strange at best.. to me of course, perhaps you might have like it. Even then, I would have my doubts.
