    A proposed alternate tracklist:

The Doors - Waiting For The Sun

    Side 1
    01 Hello, I Love You
    02 Love Street
    03 Wintertime Love
04 We Could Be So Good Together
    05 Yes, The River Knows
    06 Summer's Almost Gone
    07 My Wild Love
    08 Five To One
    Total Side Time: 22:51

    Side 2
    09 Spanish Caravan
10 The Celebration Of The Lizard
    11 The Unknown Soldier
    Total Side Time: 23:34

The total album running time is 46:25. Similarly, The Doors' first album was also 11 songs at 44:48, and L.A. Woman was 10 songs at 48:24. I actually like the above proposed tracklist a lot. I think it flows well both musically and lyrically. I'm not technical enough to know about the sound quality, but if I had to remove one track, it would be "My Wild Love".

If those are your lesser albums, you’ve had a great career. Even when they missed, they were usually very interesting.

When I reach for a Doors album it's either of these two, Soft Parade or Waiting For The Sun. Both are equally my favorites.

Their first self-titled album was a great introduction disc, the second album had a few good songs but I listen to it the least... and though I own it I never listened to Morrison Hotel. LA Woman of course is great.

Waiting for the Sun has more weak tracks than their other albums, IMO. When "Celebration of the Lizard" was rejected for inclusion on the album, the group had to come up with half an album of new songs.

Watch The Doors movie by Oliver Stone and Val Kilmer's reaction to the song. Though granted, Stone may have taken a few liberties with the truth here an there. Still a horrible, horrible song, IMO, that found "success" on crap commercial radio. The Doors were better than this.

Waiting For the Sun is my favorite Doors album. It's their most eclectic album but it still has a cohesive vibe and ,IMO, there's not a weak song on it. As for The Soft Parade, it gets a lot of hate for the orchestral arrangements, but I hear it as a progression and a bold step in going into different directions from their previous albums. The Beatles were praised for experimenting with orchestration in the late '60s, so why were the Doors castigated for it? "Tell All the People", "Touch Me", Runnin' Blue", and "Wishful Sinful" are all great melodic songs and the orchestration suits them quite well.

I love "Touch Me." The "I'm gonna love you" part has a truly beautiful melody. It's obviously a Robby Krieger composition since the intricate chord progressions were compositionally over Morrison's head. Morrison wrote some great poetic lyrics, but musically he mainly stuck to basic blues progressions( Not that there's anything wrong with that. He was just working within his limitations). Its only flaw, IMO, is the bad syntax of "Till the stars fall from the sky for you and I."

I like both as they are, and never thought of them as weaker. I especially love the mostly chill vibe of Waiting for the Sun. I'm also happy Celebration of the Lizard never saw the light of day on a regular Doors' studio record, but then their long songs (except for the interesting "Soft Parade") aren't really my thing. I would be very happy to never hear "The End" again.

The singles on these may be some of their weaker ones, but the Doors are better than their singles.

"Touch Me" is essential just for Jim Morrison's vocal alone. I think Jim's voice, not necessarily his vocals but voice, peaked on The Soft Parade album.

Agreed. Side two is quite a drop-off but continues the tradition of Doors albums having amazing closing songs with “Five to One.”

Because, IMO, the Beatles orchestrations had a psychedelic depth that the Doors didn't have. Your key word is "experimenting". I don't think the Doors were experimental with their orchestration, per se. The Beatles were.

    Waiting For The Sun ?
No... this is still a solid record.

Yeah, The Soft Parade is weaker compared to the others, but I don't think it's gutwrenching bad.

Does anybody know if any mono mixes exist for Waiting For The Sun-either dedicated or fold-downs? The thought is in my head if Waiting For The Sun is a candidate for what's been done for the first two albums this year or not.

Waiting for the Sun has it's moments, I love Love Street, Summer's Almost Gone, Five to One, The Unknown Soldier, I like parts of Hello I Love You, but I think it's a pretty patchy album overall.

The Soft Parade has my favorite Doors song, Touch Me (adventurous aren't I?), and I think it's a pretty good album. And better than the next two. I love some bluesy rock, but not the Doors' bluesy rock.

I have no idea what I was talking about when I said his weakest vocal performance was on WFTS. Five to One, Not to Touch the Earth, Yes the River Knows and The Unknown Soldier all feature some of his best performances.

For some reason I've never been fond of Strange Days or Morrison Hotel.
I prefer The Doors, Waiting for the Sun, LA Woman and Soft Parade over these two.
    PS: Saw them live twice.

I've got the expanded CD version of Waiting For The Sun which includes Celebration Of The Lizard & IMO improves the album. I also like Jim in his crooner mode on many of the tracks.

I also like Soft Parade although it does have some weaker tracks & the title track is probably the weakest longer track from any of their albums

I know there was an original gatefold mono issue in 1968 but I haven't been able to find such a re-release as you describe above. I'd very much like to see this release get the same treatment as was given to The Doors and Strange Days this year. I own those both and would purchase WFTS in second :)

I'm the same way. I actually feel that "Waiting For The Sun" is a rather noticeable and definitive step up from "Strange Days" (which I like, but it's probably my least favorite). As mentioned, there is just more depth of great songs on "Waiting For The Sun" (to me).

I do like "You're Lost Little Girl" and "When The Music's Over", but stacked up against the likes of Love Street, Wintertime Love, Spanish Caravan, Yes The River Knows, Hello I Love You, etc, there is just more going on in favor of "Waiting For The Sun". And I didn't even account for tracks like "Five To One" or "Not To Touch The Earth". :)

Was the "Waiting For The Sun" title track recorded during the WFTS sessions? If so I am shocked they kept it in the can until Morrison Hotel.

    Definitely!

I must have a tendency to find certain "worse albums" not only great, but often the artist's best! I feel "Waiting For The Sun" is the Doors best album in the same way that I feel "In Through The Out Door" is possibly Zeppelin's best album. At the least, I feel both albums best reflect the breadth of diversity that typified each band.

I often joke that if "Waiting For The Sun" and "In Through The Out Door" are the things we have to hunt for as "blemishes", then each band's legacy is more than secured! For me, it's kinda like saying "Despite 'La Dolce Vita' and '8 1/2', Federico Fellini is a legendary director". :D

Can you imagine how they would have gotten raked over the coals if WFTS had just repeated the pattern of the first two albums, i.e. - long songs closing out each LP side? That's why I like the departure that the album offers.
