Wow, six pages of thread with no mention of George Michael's "Careless whisper". Sure, it's got a chorus, but IMHO the sax melody is far more memorable than the "I'm never gonna dance again" part, and actually makes the song.

The song basically is an instrumental with a verse and some shouts thrown in, although it's hard to make out a chorus.

    "Careless Whisper",George Michael
"Baker Street", the first example mentioned, Gerry Rafferty.:)
maybe "The Letter" (borderline again), Joe Cocker.

It actually works with and without vocals. The guitar riff is slightly more recognizable.

I was planning to suggest Careless Whisper, but at least three people have beaten me to it. Other than that, I can’t think of anything-I did wonder about Fiesta by the Pogues, but that does have a vocal chorus, albeit one that has more or less the same melody as the verse and which is played as an instrumental version at least once.

I guess it depends on what you perceive as the "hook".
To me, the guitar line in Day Tripper is the hook and falls under this category even though there is a chorus. Too many songs to mention fall under the thread title but may vary from listener to listener.

The drums to me are the hook in this song.

Careless Whisper and Baker Street are both great choices.

Ones that also came to mind were:

    The Final Countdown - Europe
    Take On Me - a-ha

I thought the chorus there is
    It's cold gin time again
    You know it'll always win?!
    It's cold gin time again,
You know it's the only thing
    That keeps us togetherrrrrr!

Another one in which the saxophone, not even played by a band member, takes the spotlight and "replaces" a chorus: "Your latest trick" by Dire Straits.
