    #4 Donald Fagen/Steely Dan
    #5 R.E.M.
    #6 Kendrick Lamar (mostly DAMN.)

According to last.fm, these are my most played artists last year, all except King Crimson and Zappa exclusively becuase of boxed sets. Boxed sets contributed to the Crimson and Zappa too but they would have made the list anyway

    Maria Callas
    The Consort of Musicke
    King Crimson
    Masaaki Suzuki
    Bill Evans
    Pink Floyd
    James Kibbie
    Louis Armstrong

Eliminating boxed sets, here's the top 10

    The Cardinall's Musick
Hawkwind - becuase of the album by album thread
    Neeme Järvi
    The Tallis Scholars
    Eli Keszler
    Ronald Brautigam
    Biosphere
    Kuniko Kato
    Yacine Boularès/Vincent Segal/Nasheet Waits
    Leif Segerstam

A lot of obscure hard/heavy rock from the early '70's.

Because of the systematic and "democratic" way that I listen, my most-listened-to artists always end up being the artists I collect who have the biggest discographies, where bonus tracks, archive releases, alternate versions, availability of bootlegs, etc. all factor into it, too.

So, off the top of my head, it's basically Bach, Beethoven, Bob Dylan, Charles Mingus, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Frank Zappa, George Jones, Grateful Dead, James Brown, John Zorn, Johnny Cash, King Crimson, Miles Davis, Mozart, Neil Young, Stravinsky, Sun Ra, Willie Nelson

I'm probably forgetting some, and for some I'd need to check the numbers, but those are some of the artists in my collection with the biggest discographies, so I hear them more than most.

In the other thread I said Melanie De Biasio, Broadcast and Virginia Wing. Guess it hasn't changed much in the last few days ... My most played artists of 2017 are... though I'd guess Virginia Wing has pulled into the lead based on the ridiculous number of times I've listened to Tomorrow's Gift in the last couple weeks (and Measures of Joy too), and Chihei Hatakeyama may have moved into the top 3 now based on the number of albums I now have, and how frequently one of them has been playing, especially the latest Mirage.

Bought most of his 70s albums on vinyl last year after owning and casually listening to copies of Harvest and After The Goldrush for years. As many of you may understand, I am born anew.

    Steely Dan

Same story as with Neil. Dug deep into their catalog last year and spent many rewarding hours spinning their entire 70s discography over and over.

    Mac Demarco

A favorite contemporary artist of mine. New album This Old Dog - great, his older stuff - also great.

    The War On Drugs

Another favorite. Lost in the Dream is Album of the Decade-material and last years A Deeper Understanding is very good also. I foresee them in heavy rotation for the majority of this year.

    Black Sabbath

Because I barely go a week without listening to at least one classic Sabbath album.

    Prince

Another all time favorite artist of mine. Dug deeper into his first three albums this year and couldn't get enough of them.

    Julien Baker

Had her new album Turn Out The Lights out this fall and it's among my favorite records released last year. Her debut album Sprained Ankle was in heavy rotation, too.

For me, recent purchases usually end up on top. It's not that I don't listen to albums I've had for years, I just don't listen to them as much. The more familiar I am with something, the less likely I am to listen to it. Zappa made my list because of Halloween 77.

Well, if I'm going by albums rather than artists, it's new purchases for me, too. I listen to new-to-me albums 5-9 times or so, over the course of maybe six weeks, before I put them in the "back catalog rotation." Once they get put into the "back catalog rotation," there's no way I'm going to hear anything more than a couple times per year at the most.

But going by artists instead of albums, I have so many titles by Zappa, the Dead, etc. that I can hear one per day for a year and still not make it all the way through my collection for either. Whenever an artist comes up again (for the back catalog rotation), I go to the next album in chronological order. So it takes me a number of years to cycle through all of my Zappa or Dead titles (since I don't hear either one every day).

Fleetwood Mac got heavy play last year for me, along with solo Lindsey and Stevie. And even though I discovered them in November, Klaatu got a lot of listens too. And of course Bowie, Beach Boys, McCartney/Wings, Kinks and Steely Dan, another new discovery. Elvis Presley got a lot of listens.

I better stop or I'll just list every artist I own. :D

EDIT: Reading through the comments made me think of Jimi, R.E.M., Frank Zappa and Prince as well. And The Beatles too.

Every year, my list would change dramatically. In 2017, I do know I spent a lot of time listening to Leonard Cohen after he passed away late in 2016. His finale You Want It Darker, to me, was a wondrous exit LP. But it was great going back through his entire vast catalog and developing a greater appreciation of his work and career.

I always resisted his collaboration with Phil Spector but a number of the songs are revelations, particularly "Paper Thin Hotel."

Cohen's later albums also offer many charms alongside the classics. My favorite LC song: Came So Far For Beauty, but Treaty off the finale is simply stunning.

I have no idea. With 10,000 + titles and a lot of random pulling off the shelves, it's impossible to keep track.

I'm sure The Beatles would be in the top 10, which wasn't always the case, but has been for the last several years. Tull, Zappa and The Grateful Dead are down.
