Backup. I wasn’t happy when my Blu Ray of Dark Side of The Moon failed (known issue with the European Blu Rays), but it was easy enough to burn a replacement Blu Ray with the 96K/24 bit stereo and 5.1 files from the rips.

It's more like is DVD period dead? Everything is heading toward streaming and downloads and there are lots of downloads which are sonically identical to DVD-A except I guess you don't get to look at the static backgrounds they throw on there and you don't get to ramble over to the lyrics page or whatever. But you can get 96/24 PCM surround downloads, 192/24 PCM downloads - DVD isn't even the main way people watch movies at this point. FLAC has "replaced" DVD-A as a maybe a delivery system but the files are the same.

I felt the same way until pretty recently but being able to go online and get EXACTLY what I want immediately sure has changed my tune...

How do you work that out? To rip a DVD-A all you need is a computer with a DVD-drive and there's a few different software options. To rip SA-CD you need a specific player for one and it looks like a much more convoluted process...

My music tastes are too weird for any streaming service to accommodate. When Spotify can actually dial up Cicala-Mvta, maybe I'll investigate.

No I won't. Freeform radio and Youtube for me until further notice.

Meanwhile, my server, uhhh, serves me well.

I'm talking about downloads. I don't think you can get more DVD-A in the shops than you can get FLAC hi-res surround titles online. But not streaming. I don't really stream either. And you can download them for free by the way (which I'm sure you know) 20thbonus, by CICALA-MVTA

    Ah. Gotcha.

I did NOT, despite regularly roaming bandcamp. Thanx!

To me a format is "dead" when there are no more releases in that format. So 8-track, laser disc and HD-DVD would be "dead" formats. If there were a handful of DVD-A releases in the past year it wouldn't be a "dead" format IMO.

I have done both. While you do need one of several specific players, I have several. As for the process, SACD ripping is less convoluted in my experience.

I wish it wouldn't be dead. what a beautiful format! hi-rez downloads kill this as well unfortunately only a little bit more than a thousand titles released. how sad
