I was watching a couple of films that supposedly take place in winter. Snow on the ground, snowflakes falling, yet when the actors speak, you can't see their breath. Preposterous.

I like how many Christmas shows/movies have "winter" scenes that have just patchy "snow" in spots along the sidewalk, probably a by-product of filming in August in Vancouver for the December market.

I have noticed that actors often spend time outdoors in winter weather, with snow on the ground, wearing no hat or gloves, and a light coat or no coat.

You wouldn’t survive for very long in my home town in central Wisconsin dressed like that.

It seldom happens that a film crew is working with real snow.
Depends if they're filming at Winter time or not, or how's the location's weather during the time they filming. Surely there are time limits for filming scenes.

I have nothing to add other than my favorite snow related movies:
    • Shining
    • 30days of night
    • Fargo
    • Ice Storm
    • The Thing

    That is about it.

I would think the '80s remake of THE THING was certainly one of the coldest sets, at least the compound exteriors.

hehe, good point! My post was directed at The Day After Tomorrow. The giant holes in the plot weren't created by CGI, however! :)

In some TV shows that do a Christmas episode, they have fake snow on the ground but you can still see all the leaves on the trees during the outdoor scenes.

  18. For true freezing winter conditions in a film look no further than Altman's "Quintet"

Bender Rodriguez RIP Exene, best dog ever. 2005-2016

The most recent season of Game of Thrones featured a band of adventurers venturing north of The Wall facing freezing temps and howling winds without covering their heads or extremities. All I was thinking the whole time was "instant frostbite." Totally took me out of the show.
