Unfortunately, it's darn near impossible to read any Game of Thrones article on the Internet without some know-it-all book reader spoiling who did it in the comments. For now, I'm taking them with a grain of salt. They've already deviated from the books in some instances, so it would be pretty cool for GRRM (who wrote this episode) to give the finger to everybody and change who did it in the TV series.

It's obvious that the Fool was involved, somehow.

Exactly. To be fair, those of us who know what happened in the book could be wrong. Things have been changed for the TV adaptation.

I'm sure there are parts in the books he looks back on now and says "I wish I had done that a different way". He may make some drastic changes. Who knows besides him and HBO? The key to the success of this series is excitement and unpredictability (and softcore porn). If this series suddenly becomes dull, the ratings will drop like a rock.

True. I've heard quite a few negative comments about the later books that lead me to hesitate reading the series. The books existed entirely in his head, while the series is a collaborative effort that benefits from near-instantaneous fan reaction.

I think some of the plots in the later books just get so heavy and confusing so I'm confident they'll appropriately water it down and cut out unnecessary stuff.

I think the producers did a superb job in the premiere episode of Season 4 of keeping the story line pretty simple and made it easy to get back into the series without getting bogged down in forgotten details. I've read all the books so far, and [NO SPOILERS], the book series suffers from several problems: the author likes to protract resolution of the main conflicts in favor of collateral stories and their details; this becomes very apparent in books 4 and 5. (As I recall, book 4 was allegedly twice the length and the editing to size left it bogged down in most of the side stories). Given the pace at which the author writes, I'm wondering if the HBO show will have to wrap up before the remaining novels are completed. Don't take this as a criticism of the television series- overall, i think they've done a brilliant job. And, while I'm not usually a reader of 'fantasy' books (though I like science fiction and history), the book series, despite its ups and downs, has kept me waiting for the next release.

I always assumed Joffrey would not die a natural death but rather die by being cut into little tiny bits. However, the death by poisoned pie at his wedding reception while acting like a bully tyrant was just killer...no pun intended. ;)

How do you know it was the pie that was poisoned?

Not having read the books it's lovely to think and speculate about who did it! Motives enough all around. I loved the build-up of the tension between the Lannisters en the character of Joffrey, who was a son of a gun in the first place and got worse and worse until he became the little sadistic tyrant. I've seldom felt so happy when a character died...but then...who's the real queen or king now; surely it's the new queen Margaery Baratheon? Or still Cersei? Or the ever-present Tywin Lannister?

The weddings are always fun in these series, aren't they?

These aren't spoilers, as I am talking about stuff we've seen in the TV show:

Since, officially now, Joffrey, Tommen and Marcella are considered the children of Robert Baratheon, Tommen becomes king.
Now about who controls the actual power, it essentially becomes reset of where Cersei assumed it would be when Joffrey first assumed the throne- that she, as Queen Regent, would rule in his stead until he marries, with Tywin doing the actual work of ruling.

What I love about Cersei is how presumptuous she is. She seemed genuinely shocked that psycho-Joff would exert his own will, Margaery would make moves of her own, or Tywin- the man who essentially ruled the kingdom for 20 years before- wouldn't really win any power struggle.

As long as homey can think, talk and spend money, Tywin Lannister is in charge.

The large pigeon pie with the live pigeons in it was just for show, it was meant to be cut open and have the pigeons fly out. The pigeon pie for eating (or pies as it was a large party) was cooked separately. At least that is my assumption.

But as everyone knows, this was more common a few centuries ago. Before I was born. :D

It's not the pie. The key clue has already been mentioned in this thread.

It's been made pretty clear that wives have no place in succession - Daenerys had to earn the respect of the Dothraki by walking into her husband's funeral pyre to assume the title of Khaleesi. Tommen is next in line for the throne, no matter what Cersei or Margaery might want.

Ultimately though, Tywin is still in charge.

In fact, Margaery is not really Joffrey's full widow since the marriage was never consummated.

That girl has no luck in marriage :(

And I also think she might have a very difficult time finding her next suitor. They all seem to die.... :sigh:

I can't imagine her waiting around for Tommen. Who is the Black Widow going to get her claws into next?

Just from watching the episode, it seems to me it was Diana Rigg - her ironic statement about how terrible it is to kill someone at a wedding, and that the goblet was sitting in front of her - points to her. But no motive that I can tell. Other people here hinting about the necklace make me think the bride was in on it too.
Really, I'm surprised half the people there didn't get up and strangle him.

I was watching this most recent episode closely, following speculation about the necklace that Dontos gave Sansa and how the Queen Of Thorns may have used it to poison Joffrey ... bloody hell the continuity gets all stuffed up. QoT goes up to Sansa and strokes her hair, then puts her hand on the back of the chair; cut away to QoT standing next to Sansa with her hands by her side; cut back to QoT with her hand now back on chair; cut back again to QoT with her hands by her side; etc. I assume there's a clue there but dunno what is deliberate and what is cutting error now. Or maybe it's meant to be deliberately confusing to throw off the scent ...

    SPOILER WARNING

OK: Look at the upper right side of the necklace just before QoT walks away. What's missing? Go back further in the episode and see what the necklace looks like then. Then go back and watch what QoT does with her right hand when she seems to stroke Sansa's cheek.

    END SPOILER
