Just thought I would spread the word that NOW SOUNDS has issued DONNA LOREN's These Are The Good Times: The Complete Capitol Recordings. The 29-track CD is shipping to customers this week.

    • 29 TRACKS—HER ENTIRE CAPITOL ERA ON ONE CD!
    • INCLUDES MONO MIX OF BEACH BLANKET BINGO LP—FIRST TIME ON CD!
    • SOURCED FROM THE ORIGINAL MASTER TAPES!
    • FEATURING 8 PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED TRACKS!

A regular vocalist on ABC-TV’s Shindig!, and cast member of American International Pictures’ Beach Party series, DONNA LOREN was also a recording artist for Capitol Records in the mid-’60s, cutting one classic soundtrack LP, Beach Blanket Bingo. But there’s so much more to the story.

Featuring the participation of numerous Wrecking Crew members as well as legendary producers DAVID AXELROD, STEVE DOUGLAS, and arrangers H.B. BARNUM, JACK NITZSCHE, and BILLY STRANGE, These Are The Good Times: The Complete Capitol Recordings reveals Donna to be an extraordinary vocalist creating Spectorian-like wonder with some of Hollywood's finest talent during pop's golden era. Even THE BEAU BRUMMELS appear on one track (“It’s Gotta Be”), along with GLEN CAMPBELL.

In addition to her album—presented from the original MONO masters for the first time on CD—all 5 of her original Capitol singles, circa 1964–1965, are also here. Rounding out the collection are 8 previously unreleased Capitol-era tracks—some of the finest recordings she ever made. These cuts will leave you baffled as to why they were left in the can!

The deluxe, full-colour booklet also includes rare, unpublished photos and extensive liner notes that feature the participation of Donna herself.

Just picked this one up via Amazon UK on the strength of Now Sounds' previous reissues. Though I don't always dig the music they release, the mastering and package design is typically first rate. At the very least, this Donna Loren reissue (?) will be an attractive addition to my collection. Stay awesome, Now Sounds!

You guys at Now Sounds are fantastic! I still can't get enough of your Book A Trip comps, your reissue of The Sugar Shoppe's lone LP, your Every Mothers Son complete MGM recordings disc, and your expanded edition of Marc Eric's A Midsummer's Day Dream. I didn't even mention your individual album reissues for The Association! Keep the good stuff comin'!

Like the Donna Loren disc, I'll happily take my chances with most all of Now Sounds' releases, provided I have even the slightest interest in the artist or cover art. There are so many jewels in your record label's crown.

Just ordered an autographed copy of These Are The Good Times, as well. Lots of sound samples at Donna's web site. A beautiful voice from a very pretty girl! Why wasn't she an international singing sensation?

This release is going to be great!

“I’m just a little girl, but I feel a woman’s love for you,” Donna Loren sings on the first track of Now Sounds’ delicious new anthology These Are The Good Times: The Complete Capitol Recordings. Those familiar with the teen starlet’s lone Capitol long-player, Beach Blanket Bingo, might be forgiven for thinking this release would be more of the same sand-and-surf fun. But as Gerry Goffin and Carole King’s “Just a Little Girl” reveals, there’s much more to the music of Donna Loren. The newly discovered tracks on Good Times lyrically hew, in large part, to the teen-pop territory of melancholy and devotion. But in every respect – not least of all vocally and musically – they’re prime West Coast pop nuggets. Fans of the Los Angeles sound will recognize every name here, all at the top of their game: producers David Axelrod, the outré pop guru, and Steve Douglas, Wrecking Crew saxophonist; arrangers Jack Nitzsche, H.B. Barnum, Gene Page and Billy Strange; musicians Hal Blaine, Carol Kaye, Lyle Ritz, Ray Pohlman, Tommy Tedesco, Larry Knechtel, Don Randi, Plas Johnson, Julius Wechter, and future headliners Glen Campbell and Leon Russell. - Joe Marchese, The Second Disc, April 22nd, 2014
