No. The two best known engineers for reconstruction/remastering of historical recordings are Ward Marston and Mark Obert-Thorn and I am much more familiar with them since I have quite many Naxos Historicals that were reconstructed/remastered by them.

CD1 is quite nice. I am furious with ImportCD's because the twofer jewel case arrived completely crushed due to super-flimsy packaging, though the CD's are not damaged. Unfortunately, due to the integrated CD art and jewel case, I cannot replace the jewel case either. I just gave ImportCD's the worst rating with the appropriately nasty comment on Amazon ...

Recorded by great Elite Recordings team and mastered by Ludwig, this is a classic.

As per my checking (stand of releases: 2012 acc. to https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B78d_YZgJUXveFlZTkstQmplU28/edit ), everything is released for the first time except - perhaps - of CD#2 whose sonatas were issued by Brilliant but with a date one day later (3 May 78). Still, these can be different performances.

Side note: can you deduce from the photo that they are 20 years of age apart?

Munchinger is my imprint version. Found a very nice sounding mono London LP set very recently, must have been from the first press.

After a certain point Szell/Cleveland ceased being the regional also-rans competing with obscure artists from Philips, Holland and landed on the Columbia imprint.

Szell Conducts Two Musical Fables [Kodály Zoltán: Háry János suite/Sergey Prokofiev - Lieutenant Kijé] is an absolute must have. Sound is way above average for Szell/Cleveland. The original vinyl is actually very good:

Another Columbia/Szell/Cleveland must have—I am not aware of any musician as keenly attuned to Haydn's unique sense of humor as was George Szell.

Had those on LP. Maybe Warners will re-release them on CD now that they have become major players in the classical world.

As mentioned, the recent Haydn bargain box on Sony is a marked sonic improvement.

Doubtless—didn't say I liked the sound of the Haydn series. Does it look like this?[IMG]

Photoshop is a powerful tool. Not sure there was much if any Photoshop with this CD cover. That's pretty much what those two look like in person no makeup.
