Nothing from the classic Mothers lineup? Start with FREAK OUT, then proceed chronologically. You'll want it all eventually anyway!

  5. Here are 5 titles not in your collection that I'd recommend to anybody who's interested in Frank Zappa:

    Freak Out
    Roxy & Elsewhere
    One Size Fits All
The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life
    Make A Jazz Noise Here

FZ's relentless potty humor really gets old fast, but this is a pretty good list. Weasels Ripped My Flesh is my personal favorite. I would add that one and the Helsinki concert in place of FO and MAJNH.

You will receive many suggestions here, go ahead on any, you can't go wrong with Zappa, my favorite ones after reading what you already have:

    Waka Jawaka
    The Grand Wazoo
    One Size Fits All
    Chunga's Revenge
    Tinsel Town Rebelion

I started out with these beauties:
    - Hot Rats
    - Apostrophe/Overnite Sensation (both on one CD)
    - One Size Fits All
    - Chunga's Revenge
    - Zoot Allures

(Grand Wazoo, Waka Jawaka, You Are What You Is followed shortly after and if you are a guitar freak you gotta have "Shut Up And Play Yer Guitar" and "Guitar"!)

Joe's Garage is essential. (A lot of people would say that Hot Rats is essential too, but not me.)

I'd agree with Make A Jazz Noise Here: my personal favourite.

    That leaves:
    • either We're Only In It For The Money or Freak Out! (You'll want both eventually.)
    • One Size Fits All
    • Läther

We're Only in it for the Money is his brilliant hippie-days lampoon from the sixties (my CD is dated 1999, after some research on which one to get). I don't think anyone's said Weasels Ripped My Flesh, another Mothers album. A lot of his 'stuff' I can't really distinguish album from album, though I did hear most of it years ago. As I remember it it's a bit like a great stream of unwholesome consciousness. I think he's supposed to have left hundreds of unreleased songs, so expect people to list all kinds of stuff!

Sounds like the OP already has Roxy & Elsewhere.

But this is a great list. The ill-fated '88 big band was just fantastic.

I'd replace Freak Out with We're Only In It For The Money, and since they seem to already own Roxy, how about You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 2: The Helsinki Concert? It's always nice to use those last two titles to compare the band from very early on that tour, to towards the end where they just because lightning fast and skin tight.

Love that one. And since I don't have any experience with the original versions, I am not stressed about paying a lot more $$ for the "proper" mixes. I liked it when I first heard it.

I also third or fourth the suggestion of Guitar. So much 6-string goodness on there.

These are great lists. For me, Freak Out is a little bit more approachable than Absolutely Free, though they're both essential listens. You could also try Mothermania to get a decent feel for that era. (and I want to say it has a unique version or two on it?)

One Size Fits All - since you already have most of the albums from that era band
The Grand Wazoo - for continuing down the Hot Rats path.
Freak Out - since you should have some of the original Mothers
We're Only In It For The Money - another essential original Mothers.....and my favorite
Joe's Garage - acts, 1,2,3 - next place to go after Shiek Yerbouti.......great story and great songs.

    6th choice
Burnt Weenie Sandwich - my favorite of his experimental albums.

I love a lot of others too, but these are the next best immediate choices.
