My favorite period is when Greg Walker was in the band - Amigos, Inner Secrets and Moonflower. Love tracks like "Stormy," "One Chain," "Move On" "Dance Sister Dance" and "She's Not There." I know this is heresy, but Inner Secrets is my most favorite Santana album!

Thank goodness for that gig that was multitracked for the closing of the Fillmore West (available on the deluxe III). That once-in-a-lifetime version of "In A Silent Way" is a stone-free, jaw-dropping classic. It's one of the finest performances of its era -- never fails to knock my friends out when I spin it.

It's not the best recording in the world, but the MFSL versions are the best I've heard. There's an SACD version in the works, I think.

    Nope.

  7. Yes, I also happened to be a big prog rock fan in that specific timeframe. I actually was not a Santana fan at all in the early 70s, and neither was I into the Mahavishnu Orchestra that much yet when LV&S got released. I don't know exactly what it is that drew me in that direction. Maybe the front cover, with its message of friendship and sympathy... plus that weird, Stan Laurel-looking guy with the totally un-RnR hair style! There had to be something there! LOL... Perhaps also another pal of my friend and I, who him was into jazz a lot and used to snob us a bit that we weren't really serious about digging guitar if we kept listening to those crude "Zeppelin groups", challenged us into that area.

There is a moment in "Let Us Go..." where McLaughlin goes on for so long and is so out there, that Santana sounds like he's left "speechless" when his turn comes, and can't really respond anything coherent, so Johnny takes over again...

But Carlos is still marvelous overall on this record!

Loved him right out of the gate. I've seen him live several times over the years, he always puts on a fantastic concert, high energy.

A few of my fav overlooked albums of his are Welcome, Borboletta, Moonflower, Swing Of Delight & Love, Devotion, Surrender with John McLaughlin.

That's pretty much where I stand.

I so would like to see an AF or MoFi Borboletta remaster.

on a kind of related note, in 1986 i had the chance to sit in with a band calling themselves the sounds of s.f. it was john cipollina of quicksilver, gregg douglass of hot tuna, alex ligertwood, dave margen and joey covington of jefferson airplane. i'm sure many here remember margen and ligertwood's stay with santana. i sat in on drums for covington at the end of the show one night at the old lone star cafe in new york. i played with a post bob weir version of kingfish at the same show. it's a night i won't soon forget.

Big Fan. My third ever live show was Santana with Tower of Power opening - the Academy of Music on 14th Street in NYC in 1974. Borboletta had just come out. I still remember parts of the show. Jose Chepito Areas threw a drum stick into the audience and me and three other people had our hands on it. I lost out. :sigh:

Anyway, saw him many times after that, at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ, and the Palladium (the former Academy of Music) in NYC. I know I saw the Festival '77 show, since I still have a T-shirt from the show (doesn't fit). I also saw a show on each tour for the albums Moonflower, Inner Secrets, Marathon and Zebop. A show I will never forget is when they played in the South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, NJ (John Scher put on a summer concerts series in a big field in the Reservation). I grew up and lived there at the time - the show was 5 minutes from my home!!!

The band actually played the Bottom Line once, broadcast on the radio... I tried to get a pair of tickets but couldn't.

I also saw the Supernatural Tour from the 2nd row at the PNC Bank Arts Center, and then saw him again a few years later.

I remember in the early years (1974 on), seeing him live, the show was so full of energy that it felt as if the entire stage was moving!!!

I loved Santana since hearing them on the Woodstock soundtrack and seeing the movie (my father took me to see the movie as I was only 11 years old and I begged him). I also begged him to take me to see Santana at the Fillmore East around the same time, but he insisted that the show was sold out (not sure he even tried for tickets or not).

I just stumbled onto this thread while listening to my newly purchased Mofi "Self Titled" album. It sounds much better than my well traveled original.
If you want a real treat, find the Ottmar Liebert/Santana collaboration of "Samba Pa Ti".

Thanks, but no thanks. Too much more vital music to check out than revisit what I know I don't like.

One of the few electric guitarists who is immediately recognizable - my favourite album is Borboletta , but I like all the early ones up to Welcome ( Caravanserai being my least favourite) - also a band Ieally would like to have seen live at that time - there is some footage of Santana at the Montreux Jazz Festival I think 1969 ,the energy on stage is just amazing , that late 70's - early 80`s stretch with Shango and Zebop etc was just plain awful - I didn' t really follow their comeback with Supernatural etc but what I heard was ok

The ad for the Academy of Music show that davmar77 posted was not the show I saw. I just looked at the Santana Tour Archive and that show was in 1972, and it says Monday. I know I went to a show on a Saturday - so it was 10/12/74, but just as the show in 72 Tower of Power opened that show as well.

Strange - davmar77's post with the Santana ad for The Academy of Music is now missing from the thread???

I'm lucky enough to have seen SANTANA in every iteration of his career. I saw Woodstock Santana and Mahavishnu Santana and AOR Santana and CHR Santana. Sadly, now he's Casino Santana and he wants $150 when he comes to my town this Summer. Granted it's a small venue but Santana is no longer relevant enough artistically to charge that much money. Not that he won't get it, mind you.

Concert ticket prices are up across the board for all/ most acts this summer.

They finally caught on and figured out that stubhub etc is the real price people are willing to pay.
