Love XTC, but GO2 isn't even the same league as later XTC albums, let alone anything in the Beatles catalogue.

And Sgt Pepper isn't as good as Revolver. There. I said it.

How about someone posting a link to "Skylarking" since I never heard of it before this thread. I tried looking it up on Wikipedia, all I could find was a 1972 "Roots Reggae" album (outside of Bob Marley I know nothing about Reggae) by Horace Andy. Who was Horace Andy anyway? You are comparing him to The Beatles? Too much ganja mon! :tsk:

I don't think the comparison is strange at all. They are two albums, one cut very much from the mold of the first. Why wouldn't you be able to compare them?

While Skylarking was part of the soundtrack to my teenage years, I don't even see how this is a contest. Pepper.

I like some Beatles albums more than Pepper. I like some XTC albums more than Skylarking.

    Tie.

    P.S. I still say albums.

Actually, comparing Horace Andy to the Beatles would be more interesting than XTC.

Skylarking is unimaginable without Pepper, but Skylarking is a much better album.

Andy Partridge is light years beyond John or Paul as a lyricist. The Beatles at their best never maintained the lyrical consistency of even average XTC.

So, considering the music, lyrics, and vibe, I'd say Skylarking is a much better album.

I know it's a flame-bait thread, but I can tell you which album I put on more frequently. It isn't by the Beatles.

I agree - comparing albums from different periods when music changed so much is difficult and not meaningful.

Neither is either band's best album. English Settlement v The White Album would be fairer. Or Wasp Star v Let it Be.

Both are among both bands' best albums, IMO, but I would definitely vote for Skylarking.

Sgt Pepper's by zillion years of distance, even when I like a lot XTC this is not a fair contest, IMO isn't the best album XTC did, and Beatles do not need to put their best on scene, XTC needs to do it to be compared with any the Beatles did.

In the other hand, there is no other album so much liked on my childhood days than the SPLHCB, so an additional reason to vote for it.

In response to some earlier posts, I don't think it's at all inappropriate to compare these two albums on musical basis. While, it would not make sense to compare them in terms of, say, cultural impact, both albums are rooted in pop song craft, and I think comparisons on that scale are completely valid.
