But, c'mon "Pushin' Too Hard" deserves mention as does Fire's "My Father's Name was Dad," to represent both boxes.

Given my tastes, I think the Nuggets box set on Rhino was a stellar extrapolation of the original concept of the 2-LP set from '72... The packaging and extremely great liner notes present the music in proper context. The mastering might be a bit too hot, but at least many of the original mono 45 mixes were used.

At the time, the only two glaring "classic" omissions from the set, IMHO, were "96 Tears" by ? and the Mysterians and "99th Floor" by the Moving Sidewalks.

The Rumors "Hold Me Now" was a nice choice for the boxset, but I would've gone with its b-side, "Without Her".
It takes a "Day Tripper" like riff that drones over and over and over and adds a moody, Belle & Sebastian-like lead vocal to create magic. Look out for the raunchy guitar solo at 1:25.

IIRC Without Her wound up on one of the 80s Rhino single-record Nuggets volumes.

    "Louie Louie" has to win.

That's the only song I can think of that can actually be played in most garages at any skill level.

For some reason, The Dovers "What am I Going to Do" was one of those tracks from the box that didn't implant in my brain initially. It was one of those "meh" tunes.
My opinion has turned 180 degrees recently. It's an absolute highlight to me now. I recommend tracking down their complete recordings - it's EP length (only 8 tracks), but every single tune is memorable. If you like jingle in your jangle, you'll be in seventh heaven:

I discovered this one last year: "Eyes" by Just Two Guys (don't cha love how that rhymes?)

I begins with "Sunday Morning"-like vibes and gentle odes to their girls' peepers, but it turns into a heavy stomper.
It's the blueprint for the indie/alt rock "heavy/soft/heavy" thing, except it's inverted ("soft/heavy/soft"):

Funny, I've always disliked What Am I Going To Do, and sorta still do.
But ALL of the other 7 songs on "We're Not Just Anybody"are absolutely KILLER!
    Highly recommended!!

This is of course impossible. AND it's easy as pie. What's the one that more than any other, year after year,
just sticks in your mind, follows you around, that you just can't get rid of, like a drop of unwanted super glue on your brain.
We all have at least one of those. There are a couple dozen at the top of the heap for me, but there is one above all others,
whether I like it or not, that just won't let go (of me) as the decades melt away. 96 Tears. Why? Not a clue.

It's funny, that one. I had a game I played with two of my friends for over ten years. someone would spit out a topic
that needed a one word answer. and all three of us would then respond at the same time. We never gave the same answers
because usually these things are a matter of personal taste..... except once. Somebody yelled. "THE single of the sixties".
And all three of us simultaneously immediately blurted out "96 Tears," a record that had never come up in conversation in all those
years. Weird. Not only did I not suspect the others would name it, I didn't even know I would say it! Weird.

Matter of taste, of course. But personally I HATE Gloria - Shadows of Knight. How can you listen to that, after hearing the other-worldly original?
(Obviously that is a rhetorical exclamation. Of course you can listen to it. You LOVE it. You just said so. :)) Clearly you hear something in it
that evades me and more power to you.
