....and if you can handle veering into Lowrey land, check out Dick Hyman. It's often a little weird, but certainly not boring, and the LPs sound great:

Do you have any specific LPs you recommend?

The Album "That's Me" is amazing and one of the best B-3 albums.

I like Count Basie on organ on One Nighter. The album is called Basie Jam and I have an Analogue Production gold CD.

How about the great Shirley Scott?

I was just going to add Shirley to the list. Some very enjoyable albums with Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and others.

Jack McDuff & Charles Earland are two of my favorites. Richard "Groove" Holmes and Don Patterson are two other good ones. Their recordings on Prestige are good.

McDuff cut some recordings with George Benson that are really good and Earland's first few albums for Prestige are especially good including two live ones.

There is a McDuff sampler called the Prestige Years if you want to get an idea of what he sounds like. My favorites of his are Hot Barbeque and a couple of live albums he cut with Benson.

Dr. Lonnie Smith cut a few good albums for Blue Note as well. All of them are worth picking up.

Charles Kynard also put out some good albums and a few have Grant Green on guitar.

Sonny Phillips also released a few good ones on Prestige.

Outstanding! I don't understand how organ players can split their brain and keep a bassline like that going on their feet while playing solos with one hand and comping on the other. Amazing.

Cool MIDI control on the B-3 too.

thanks, John. I was about to be startled that nobody yet mentioned the 'doctor of the B3' in here. think! from 1968, with its fantastic cover of Masekela's 'son of ice bag' is a great place to start.

(not to be confused with Lonnie Liston Smith, by the way.)

  21. Two of my favourite jazz albums featuring the Hammond B3 organ:

    Larry Young - Unity

Great line up featuring Woody Shaw and Elvin Jones, and best of all lots of lovely B3 from Larry Young.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unity_(Larry_Young_album)

Ingrid Jensen & Project O - Now As Then

There are better Ingrid Jensen albums available, but "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes" is one of her finest performances and Gary Versace adds some great B3 throughout the entire album.

Twodawgzz But why do you ask such questions...

Unless I missed it, no mention here of Jimmy McGriff... perhaps my favorite B3 player. I would describe his style as R&B/Jazz.
