There has been a lot of discussion lately about the VTA spacers on Rega turntables and how Rega has done its darnest to discourage owners from using 3rd party cartridges. I wonder to what extent they have been successful with this strategy.

I have heard assertions that MOST Rega owners use 3rd party cartridges.

    So let's find out.

On the Rega 3 I was given, It came with a Magnepan Unitrac arm and a Dynavector Ruby 23
On the Rega P5 I bought, I got it with a Benz Glider.
I would not use a Rega cartridge.

Rega Planar 3 with AT95E, Linn K9 & finally Goldring 1012GX. Never felt the desire to even try a Rega cart!

Used to have a Planar 3. At first had a Linn K9. After a number of years I switched to a Rega Exact. I've heard that Dynavector is a good match.

I've used a Rega arm for years -- and once long ago a Rega table -- but I've never used a Rega cartridge.

  11. Not a Rega table, but I do use the RB250 tonearm which has never been mounted with a Rega Cartridge. Currently use an Ortofon 2M Black.

I had an Elys on a P5 for a while. I changed to a wood Benz on the P5 and then later to a P9. There were some Goldring and Dynavector cartridges in there along the way.

    On a P5: From Exact2 to 20x2L.

As I've pointed out in the past, with the 3-point-mounted tonearms changing VTA is very easy with the Acoustic Signature split shims.

Planar 3 + RB300 + Exact. I started out with the Elys 2 that came with the TT (bought via Audigon), but switched to the Exact. Not had the opportunity to try other options, but I like what I hear from the Exact.

I have a P3, which came with a Rega Elys. I suffered through that cartridge for a while before upgrading to a Dynavector 10x5, which I much much preferred. I ran the 10x5 for its entire lifespan, then moved up to a Dynavector 20x2L for my next cartridge, which I am still using.

    Dynavector 10x5 is what's on my RP6.
I have experimented with Shure, Goldring, Ortofon, and Nagaoka. None of them have what the Dyna has for me. Pure music.

I had a Rega Elys, Ortofon OM 30 and even a Denon MC 103. The Goldring beats them all (at least for my setup)

I'll think the results will show that the majority of people dont use Rega cartridges. it's the vocal minority who try to persuade potential Rega turntable buyers that it's a shortcoming of the brand that they have to use Rega carts etc

I briefly had a Rega P3 that was fitted with a Rega Elys 2 (iirc), and was very unhappy with it (inner groove distortion, sibilance, etc.; yes the TT and cart were set up by the shop I bought it in), to the point where if I had kept the P3, I'd have switched the Elys to an AT440MLa.
