Buy the -4/-4, it is better, even though the loud cut isn't as bad as some people say.

Get the 4 or the 5. The 4 is the warmer of the two. The 5 comes across as a little more detailed but drier. Not a big difference and of course -- system dependent.

The loud cut is the -1/-1 isnt it? I have it, I dont hear what all the fuss is about, sounds loud...but good to me.

You're right on both points in my experience. Yes, the -1 isn't all that bad. Still, I got rid of a -1 and kept a -4. Much nicer to my ears.

Yes, but the -4 sounds a bit more natural.

The worst thing that ever happened with mono Rubber Soul's was the idea that the -1 is "loud", as though it's the RS equivalent of the famous RL Led Zeppelin II.

Agreed, the -4 cut is my favorite. The so called 'loud cut' is not that bad, but to my ears it's a bit strident, and there are fuzzy distortions on the peaks, especially the vocals. The -4 cut is closer to an "audiophile" experience.

Yes the -1 has a slightly 'over saturated' slightly distorted sound if you compare it to the cleaner 4 or 5. Don't forget the 5 - its really close to the 4 as I mentioned. 4 and 5 are the two I keep.

my -5 sounds very clean, and gets the most airplay for mono RS in my house. I have a -1 and a -4 also.

If Im reaching for Rubber Soul, its likely to be the -5 for mono and German stereo.

Its not often that I play a Capitol even tho, like many, I like the track listing. I guess track listing is trumped by sound quality after all...

Well quite, but I've noted it said outside of this forum - you find positive things said about it on some eBay listings a bit too, sadly.

That is right, a lot of people actually think it is the holy grail of Rubber Soul.

I've got one and actually think it's fun in a trashy distorto kinda way. I certainly wouldn't want it to be my only copy.
