I want to buy this, place it horizontally and put my speakers on it. I know they should be further apart but my space is limited.

My question is, will it work? I have Wharfedales 10.1. Should I just go speaker stands?

Stands. Your speakers want a firm foundation and some space to breathe if you REALLY want to hear them do their best work.

I used to have small speakers on something similar (different Ikea shelves), and putting Auralex pads underneath them worked wonders.

That sounds about right for speakers in that budget. Does Sanus make a fillable stand? It's fun to experiment with kitty litter and see what you can get out of your speakers. I have a friend with some B & W's and we were pretty surprised at what a difference such an invisible and cheap tweak could make.

Is kitty litter cheaper than sand?

Playground sand costs something like $1.49 for a big, heavy bag at Home Depot. That's what I filled my stands with.

Just ordered a set. Let's see what 38 bucks gets me.

Sorry I'm late to the party.

I used to have very similar speakers on a secondary system I had, and I put them on a similar shelving unit with no problems. I get where the stand guys are coming from, and I'm not saying they are wrong, but will the shelving system work? In my personal experience, yes.

I was all set to use an Ikea shelf, but they want 99 bucks to ship the thing. Thanks for the input though.

Burbank is not that far from you. Take an evening drive, have some Swedish meatballs for dinner and pick up your Kallax.

Aha...that is a consideration. For what it's worth, I drove home to Santa Barbara with that same box in my back seat with about a foot of it sticking out the side window.

If you are going to fill stands I really like black aquarium sand from a pet store. It is dryer than play sand, won't clump, can be poured through a funnel (some stands have small openings) and with a slight tap of a mallet will settle and fill in air gaps.

This can work very well for bottom end at the sake of a little stereo field.

Stability and deadening any resonances especially if metal tubing is involved in the construction.
