Artists put out new records. Short for recordings. I buy them on CD or vinyl (if I think they've taken enough care to make the vinyl worthwhile).

Records, LPs, and Vinyl work for what my turntable spins. My CD player spins CDs, SACDs, etc.

I never heard anyone call a cd an LP. That just never happened.

Sometimes say 'LP records' so people, or most of them, know exactly what's meant.

    78s and cylinders for me
    Both can be outstanding
The BBC did research and found the optimum speed to record at was 58rpm...
By far the best transients especially on a lacquer.
Lots of 30s 78 are very dynamic
    33 1/3 RPM is feeble.

    Records and LP's

Hate the term "vinyl" or to be fair.... we can call CD's by the material name they are made of? How about we refer to CD's from now on as "polycarbonate"

Anyone have the new release on polycarbonate yet?

I'll just pop in a polycarbonate for some background tunes :p

Yeah, 33's lack in a ton of bass. SACD's are definitely better than those. At least now records are mostly pressed on 180 gram vinyl so the dynamics do increase. Better base because deeper grooves. Too bad they stopped producing 78's. They could of made them less noisy than your typical 30's record. I believe the record hiss on 78's is due to the shellac that they used to make them more prone to dust and scratching. A 78 made out of modern Vinyl would sound fantastic. Does anyone know of a 78 made out of Vinyl?

Know this isn't a sound quality debate but none of that matter if the record was pressed poorly. Generally speaking records pressed today are usually given more care when being pressed because thats what the consumer buying records these days want. Good sound quality.

Not to mention most 78's you'll hear will be over 50 years old.

Growing up they were just records, broken down between LPs and 45s. That's pretty much how I prefer it, though I suppose using "vinyl" these days can be useful in order to distinguish from a digital format. I don't recall hearing them referred to as "vinyl" until the mid-'90s. Never cared for the term, though "vinyls" makes me laugh for some reason...

All of the above, but without the apostrophe in LPs.

Thats a myth, 180 gram records do not have deeper grooves or more bass. Its just thicker pressed vinyl and thats it. The grooves are the same depth as any other record.

I actually used it in my post and hadn't really thought of it, but I mostly use the term "album". A group of songs, be it on CD, LP, tape, DVD, whatever... I call an album. Some reserve the "album" term for 12" LPs, but I use "album" generically with any media.

Should be multiple options. I call them individually records or LP's, and collectively vinyl. Or I say I have such and such a title on vinyl. If someone starts a conversation about recordings and says, "vinyls", I'm not going to correct them, because I don't care. Language is about communication; as long as we both know what we're talking about, it's cool.

Records. CD's, Lp's, Tapes etc. are all recordings. Thus they all are records of a musical session.

It's just "records" since it covers LPs, EPs, 45s and 78s.

Gotta go with records! I don't have a big amount of them, but e.p.'s come into the picture as well when I think of this subject. That format was somewhat popular in the mid 50's and sadly died a noble death in the early 60's.

E.P.'s! Two songs on each side. Some were released with a paper sleeve, others with a cardboard cover type sleeve. Some of the most collectible records going would be this format, a good example would be "4 by The Beatles." And don't forget the juke box e.p.'s with the title strips. Certain titles are getting pretty pricey there as well!
