    Hello!

I've got a Tri tre-4se tube pre amp and I'd like to try some other tubes in it.
What I'd like some help with is understanding what tubes I need to change.

    There's two 5AR4 rectifiers and six ECC83.
Two of the ECC83's are put in tube covers.

I wonder if all the ECC83's need to be changed if I only need to better the sound for the turntable input or if I only need to change a couple. I've no idea how the signal is sent through it.

    Here's link: http://www.triode.co.jp/english/03.html

    Thanks in advance.

    / Erik

You need to locate an established tube testing service or purchase a refurbished tester yourself and test all those tubes. I would do this before bothering tube rolling in that unit. I could test those for you using a 539C or a 3444 and a I can also test those dual triodes for microphonics using my Kaye audio Labs tester (especially important for the tubeset running the phono section). Anyways, Test before you bother rolling.

Oh sorry, I see you are in Sweeden. Well, hopefully you can get some help locally. My offer is certainly still open if you want to go to the expense and time. Take care and good luck with it.

    Thanks for the hints.
But still I'd like to know if the signal goes through all six of the ECC83's at all times or if only two or four oof them is used when using the MM input.

    You need to tell us:

What brand of 12AX7's and rectifier tubes are in there now.

    You need to show us:

    The schematic.

But if I had to guess, I'd say the four ECC83's that are unshielded are the line and the two that have shields are the phono.

As far as I remember the tubes are just labeled "TRI".
    I can't get hold of a schematic, I'm afraid.

My guess would have been the same.
Is it genereally a bad idea to just switch the phono tubes for a better pair?

    Thanks

Well, how does the unit sound to you now? Good? Bright, dull, etc.?

Everything goes through the line tubes no matter what so those have to be great. So do the rec tubes.

Not sure what to tell you but go slow with tube swapping. On my Primaluna preamp that I got as a gift I found that swapping out the Chinese tubes that were in there changed the sound, and not for the better. Turns out the unit was voiced with the tube brand in there. When switched out, the sound went downhill.

When you do get rolling, Mullard is the gold standard for GZ34. For EC88 Telefunken or Mullard. I have had good luck with old stock Tesla before the JJ personally.

For questions on which tube does what, why not email the manufacturer? You will get a faster, more reliable response that way I would assume. I would change them all out anyway...

Thanks for all the input. I've sent a mail to them and I hope for a good answer (and perhaps a recommendation).

For clarity, the EC88 is not the equivalent to the ECC83 family.

So any idea on how to find such a service or suggestions?

I have a bunch of tubes that were laying around my old lab that I need tested.
