I doubt W. heard it, as well as most of the nation. Most of those that did hear it gave it a great big shrug. Now it's in the dustbin of history's oddities. I bet W. did hear the one from Toby Keith though.

I personally think its a low point for Paul... not just as a musician but as a human being.

I wonder what he thinks of it?

I don't have any venomous hatred for this song like most people here - nor am I a fan of it. Maybe because it's release, and the Concert for NY was a bit before my time (I was but only a wee lad of 7). It's a one-time throwaway for me and Paul's right when he says although he thought it was the right idea at the time, in hindsight it isn't.

Let's forget for two seconds the historical events that inspired this song and simply talk about the music. This song is absolutely dreadful and to think that Driving Rain had to have this song tacked on at the end to give it an official release makes my head hurt even more. How about just doing a single and call it a day?

I think he was just in a dreadful music phase anyway. Driving Rain is SO bad. So, so, so, so, so very bad.

Good song, I prefer the solo Neil acoustic version.

I can't imagine you've NOT heard it - maybe you just don't recognize it by title:

Thanks but honestly, this has absolutely nothing to do with my original statement. I don't even know why you brought this song up in response to this:

"It was a knee-jerk response to 9/11, and it's horrible just like every single other song I've heard quickly written in response."

Why you would bring up a completely unrelated song that was recorded in 1971, I have no idea.

Aaarrgh. I hate to see this happen. Here goes…

Had you, Baba, used the phrase, "written in response to that" or "written in response to that horrible event", then your meaning would have been clear. Instead, you simply said "in response", meaning "as a reaction or reply," without indicating "to what". You might think that your real meaning was implied, but in the language you used, it wasn't. I, like Oatsdad, misunderstood your thought because of the way you said it.

    There. My work is done.

Freedom is not a good song. It is overrated - most anybody else wouldn't have had the juice to even get it heard and the world would be better off. Watch "The Love You Make." His contemporaries look embarrassed for him. I don't blame them.

Look at my post history - love McCartney. Freedom is tripe.

Because "quickly written in response" doesn't specify "in response to 9/11". It implies "in response to any significant event".

If you had specified 9/11, I wouldn't have responded, but you provided a vague, open-ended statement...

The music of the song is pretty nice in a Tom Petty-esque kind of way. But the lyrics make it blatantly obvious this song was just a shot from the hip.

Was never a fan of this song. Of course, I bought it but I have not played it in more than a decade.

As George Harrison once stated, "McCartney knows how to make the best of any situation"- and when it was released- I was in no mood for it nor anything similar.

Yeah, that visual image from "Great Day" always struck me as Paul giving a thumbs-up to the "many-worlds" interpretation of quantum theory. :)
