I have always noticed that Mick's vocals on Goat's sound very slurred. I have also noticed that on Black, he sounds very rough. Now, is it just me, or am I right about this? If I'm right, I can only attribute this to the drugs...seriously.

I think it's simply Mick's ever-evolving vocal style at play. Love both records a lot.

Never really thought about it - except that I love his vocals on Hand of Fate - would put that in my top 10 Jagger songs, vocal-wise.

I always attributed any roughness to the nature of the song, fwiw.

I'm not sure that they are super slurred to my ears, but I will say this about 1975/76 Dutch releases of the live shows - I can't listen to them because all he's doing is barking and singing seems to be the last thing on his mind. He's in a very strange phase with his delivery in the mid 70s that (thankfully) he grew out of.

Love his singing back then. I hear a lot of hard-rocking attitude and swagger in Mick's vocals... IMO far, far superior to when he started enunciating everything clearly in the watered-down Vegas Stones era., no spontaneity at all.

I love both records to death. One is forever cursed by following the greatest LP in rock history and the other is totally unique in the bands catalog as they attempt to survive the 70's and forge a new path. Endlessly interesting and each listen reveals a new wrinkle, even after 40+ years. Jagger's vocal work is restrained and downgoddamned sublime compared to the over-postured exaggerated "barking" of his live work during the same period.

Yeah.... That damned barking really ruined a few live tracks by the Stones.
