Yeah...the rumor helped them for sure...but the backlash was worse when it was discovered they were not the Beatles....and from what I know, they were not promoting the rumor...they were huddled down trying to make the second album "Hope"...when everything broke. Too bad because they were/are a great band...

Panic at the Disco's album, "Pretty Odd." My teenage daughter turned me on to this one, and I think it's great.

I suspect that without the rumors they wouldn't have got off the ground. They didn't get much airplay, and at the time just one single doing even fair was enough to get mass interest in an album.
From interviews I have read in the past I was left with the impression that the guys in Klaatu pretty much stayed in Canadian backwoods and let the music machine do its' thing without their input other than writing and recording the material.
If course that is just the general image of them I have mostly from conjecture eeked from the interviews.
But I am thinking the band members were simply in no situation to either promote or deny the rumors and were a bit isolated from the media, and that the record label certainly was not about to screw the pooch by making comments that could wreck the free publicity the album was getting.

Tons of Beatles musical references there.

Don Kloetzke was a singer/ songwriter in White Duck(they released two lp's in the early seventies). He only got a couple of songs per lp.

Man, imagine if they'd kept the original vocals for "Sir Bodsworth Rugglesby" and "Little Neutrino" - the whole album would've sounded like the Beatles' voices!

Great points...I love the first two albums and am in the process of obtaining the final three. I want to complete my Klaatu collection. I knew they were not The Beatles, but boy was it fun driving around with friends on warm evenings and blasting that first album...a real mood setter for sure...lots of memories with Klaatu.

Both "Bodsworth" and "Neutrino" with Lennon soundalike vocals are on 'Sun Set'.
