Now that I think about it, the vocals on Layla do sound too high-pitched...

I think I heard that too -- it was to fit in more ads, right?

That one almost falls into the Chipmunks category.

That must have driven people nuts, if it wasn't mentioned on the label of the 45.

A lot of them did. I even remember an FM Top 40 station in St. Louis did the same thing. It was so obvious, it was funny. I could not stand to listen to the station.

That was the main reason. Also so a station could claim they play the most music in an hour - without cutting into the time for commercials.

Thought of another: "The Weight" - Rotary Connection - Have the CD now but can't deal with the LP version because of how slow it sounds compared to the 45 that I originally had.

This is one of my favorite recordings of the 20th Century -- thank you.

Wow, Rotary Connection -- that's a blast from the past. I'll have to check that out. Thanks.

I KNEW there was an obvious one I'd forgotten -- I just did a thread on that song! I can't believe I forgot to include that here. Thank you so much.

"Everybody Loves Somebody" (45 single version) by Dean Martin - producer Jimmy Bowen had mentioned how he sped up Dino slightly to make him sound younger.

All Prince tracks that feature his Camille voice only have the vocals sped up. The rest of the music is at normal speed as far as I know. So this is another category. But now that I think of it I wonder how Prince achieved this effect. Did he sing to the recording that was slowed down ?

  20. "Let Me Take You Dancing", the debut single by Bryan Adams. It was given a "disco remix" that entailed speeding the track up, making Bryan sound like a girl in the process. Apparently he hates it so much he's never let it be reissued.

Fifty Foot Hose - Bad Trip

You have to have the Big Beat "Cauldron" CD to hear the differences.

"When I'm 64" by the Beatles is of course very sped-up, (something like a semitone higher), to give Paul's voice a "youthfull" quality !

This was intentional. But there are examples of non-intentional sped-ups in the Beatles' :

-"She's leaving home" MONO is sped-up, STEREO is not.
-Same with Don't pass me by" on the White album.

You have She's Leaving Home Backwards. The mono is the correct speed. The stereo is slowed down.

Not to mention the piano part at the end is somewhere between Cmaj and C#major.
