As I said, this guy. Nobody had a cooler look than Daniel Ash circa the height of Bauhaus and Love and Rockets. Equal parts Gene Loves Jezebel meets Ziggy Stardust with the right amount of moxy to pull it off.

also Miles was neither pop nor rock. those terms are insulting.

"Miles Davis is my definition of cool. I loved to see him in the small clubs playing his solo, turn his back on the crowd, put down his horn and walk off the stage, ..." ~ Bob Dylan

For pure rock stage persona Jimmy Page looked quite cool in his dragon and moon and star outfits.See Song Remains the Same.

I dont know about coolest looking, but for my money, the coolest guy in rock ever was Jon Lord of Deep Purple.

How on earth did it take this long for someone to post a Jimi picture? Leaves everyone else in the dust. :)

No one's getting worked up here. Human frailties are one thing, Elvis' descent into self destruction another. There's no narrative of self acceptance, enlightenment and realization here, but a pit of misery and self loathing fueled by alienation. It's very sad, and possibly tragic, but it has nothing to do with the self reliance and effortless discipline that I, for one, associate with cool. Cool, I'd say, is grace under pressure (meaning guitar heroes frenetically waving their instrument about drenched in sweat don't seem terribly cool to me.)

I've posted several entries myself. One of the first posters mentioned Morrison and I think he may be right:

See, to me people like Jim Morrison, Jimmy Page or any of those rock stars with no shirt and big hair, don't look cool. I guess I'm generally more into natural, chill, mysterious types than sexy rock star cool. I'm not knocking anyone's choices btw - just interesting to see people's various ideas of what looks cool.

My list of guys would be something like this: Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Miles Davis, Syd Barrett, Jimi Hendrix, George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Eddie Cochran.

    I'm sure I'm forgetting someone.
