No, it's because of the "s" at the end of "Eagles". If they were named "Eagle", then they'd be called "Eagle" without a "the", but if you add that "s", you're asking for a "the".

Same goes for plenty of other bands. "Bangles" aren't a living creature but people add a "the" there, too...

In a record store on the East Side of Providence, RI, back in the heyday of record stores, the bin for Eagles was labeled "The Eagos."

It's even in the title: "History of THE Eagles", not "History of Eagles".

The use of the "the" is inconsistent on various releases. Most eschew the "the" - like "The Best of Eagles" - but others include it or come phrased in such a way that avoids it like calling it "Eagles: The Vest Best of"...

Should I ever run into Glen in public, I will happily point at him and loudly declare "Look everyone, it's Glen Frey from THE eagles!"

It just seems like the right thing to do.

Because they forgot "The" when they named the band.

The Who and The Clash are Rock and Roll bands. I have never listened to much Edgar Winter, I was scared away by "Frankenstein", so I can't comment on his music. The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Blasters, The Byrds, The Allman Brothers, The New York Dolls ...etc. All Rock and Roll bands that I listen to. Journey, Styx, Kansas, Foreigner ... all Rock bands that I don't listen to.

As always, to each his own, but to paraphrase Keith Richards," if you take the roll out of rock and roll it ain't for me."

I refer to them the same way The Dude does.

So is it Pretenders or The Pretenders?

Henley and Frey threw "The" out, for the good of the band.

Did they truncate their name for the "Hell Freezes Over Tour"?
A few British groups used "The" at first: Cream, Pink Floyd and Traffic come to mind.

And yet some posters think we've lost our punch! :)

It's simple- it's supposed to be Eagles just because.

Over here when the word "Eagles" is mentioned, these are the only ones we have in mind.

Wouldn't it be more to the point to say to him "Look everyone, it's one of THE Eagles."?
