I was first aware of his work on the Roald Dahl hosted TV series "'Way Out" in 1961. That's where he did the frightening figure of Dorian Grey. Of course, this series and Mr. Smith were featured in issues of Famous Monsters of Filmland.

    Thank you, Dick Smith.

He was one of the most kind and generous human beings I have ever known. He was a mentor to so many and a role model to all. He single handedly advanced the state of the art of makeup in ways that are hard to fully measure.

I wouldnt know anything about that, but my girlfriend fully agrees with this x 1000. She already knew and has cried about it, but I feel bad too....I guess I will feel the same when Jimmy Page dies.

One can not overstate the significance of this. He and Johnny Chambers together completely changed a culture of secrecy and nepotism to a culture of sharing knowledge and a drive to advance technology. These two guys completely facilitated and lead this change and the result was an explosion in new technology and artistry.

I bought it as a reference. I did not participate. I was already working in the business when it came out. I still have my original copy with all the updates.

I hope it continues on. I know he had other artists working on critiques. It's amazing to think of someone at the top of his field being so giving to people trying to get their start. RIP, Mr. Smith.

Chris DeVoe RIP Vickie Mapes Williams (aka Equipoise)

He was amazingly generous. A friend of mine in Kansas City was into making foam latex makeup, and had a long correspondence with Dick who offered so much advice.
