In any discussion about pre-orders, the question invariably comes up whether a certain online retailer charges your credit card when you place the order or when the item ships. This is important to some folks since some items are available for pre-order months ahead of their release.

I thought it would be a good idea to create a list of online retailers that charge your card when an item ships. The list can be updated by anyone here over time.

To start, it appears from recent discussions that www.blowitoutahere.com charges you when you place a pre-order. So the list starts with:

    Blowitoutahere (www.blowitoutahere.com)

What are some others that charge you when you place a pre-order?

SoundstageDirect.com, which they claim is because PayPal is their credit card processor (even for regular credit card payments).

This is against Visa and Mastercard policy, though.

Any MusicToday online seller. ALL Sales are FINAL, and cards are hit immediately, no matter how far away the release date is.

  11. I'll say as a customer that spends thousands each year on Internet purchases, I absolutely hate pre-ordering from places that charge upfront. I had problems with Blowitoutahere on pre-orders they couldn't fill, so I refuse to pre-order with them anymore. Too many releases today get pushed back or canceled for this method to work well for customers.
