They demonstrated a thorough undertstanding of the classic Coltrane quartet sound, particularly on Dream Weaver:

I broke out Kenny Burrell -- Midnight Blue last night. I haven't listened to it in a long time. Big surprise, it is still great! I played it straight through twice.

Kenny kills it with great playing throughout. As usual, Stanley Turrentine's playing is robust and he has a nice fat warm sound.

I've been appreciating Charles Lloyd more than ever in recent years. He doesn't play with blistering chops, but he plays with great feeling, and invention and he always connects me to the music.

His groups are very organic and the playing is in service of the song not technical showboating.

My PC had to go away to get repaired which meant I lost my auto-login here and my HiFi had been inexplicably not working since last December (loose power connection ). Both now working and so I've been breaking out the vinyl ...including this.

That was a bit too much Buck Clayton. Like the Phillips/Ventura Mosaic yesterday these Clayton jam sessions are not really my cup of tea either. Switched to: Columbia Small Group Swing Sessions 1953-1962 - 8 CDs, Mosaic; disc 1

Glad you made that observation all on your own. I was gonna ask you what the difference between the 2 sets is (I have both, btw). To me, the biggest difference is that the Clayton ones were planned as jam sessions, but I doubt that Columbia planned to release as many LPs as it did.

I assume you are referring to the Clayton and the Columbia set, not the Phillips/Ventura Mosaic. So far the Columbia set sounds a bit more inspired to my ears than the Clayton, not as "samey" and routine-like, even tired, as the latter. Things may change, though...

Love this album. The closer "You Make Me So Happy" has been a favourite since I picked it up on release.

I really like Brookmeyer's piano playing and his recording with Bill Evans on The Ivory Hunters shows his skills and style well.

I had 'Love-In' when I was in high school in the late 60s. At that point I had little experience with jazz, but I knew the music was very, very groovy.
I now have the two-fer CD.

You assume correctly, and I think your observation is a significant one, and may help to shed light on why Columbia albums were much more "well done" affairs than Verve ones, in general.

Switched to disc 4 but found the vocals a letdown. I'm going to play the sessions with Coleman Hawkins and Kenny Burrell later. Now: The Essential Buck Clayton - Vanguard
