The term "indie" has become meaningless. It used to mean something (just like "alternative" did) back in the 90's, but not now.

Yup... Calling something "indie" means absolutely nothing now that it's a term that's been used in too many different ways.

 

Are we talking about recent stuff only?

Because I have a boatload of favorites - before the term Indie was used.
I think it was loosely called "College Radio" at the time because it sounded more friendly than "cool kids with money to spend on imports that were non-commercial."
The irony was that College Radio music, much from the UK, was made by, and purchased by people in the UK with very little money, but had sensibilities that were non-commercial.

So just because a term is over-used, that makes it meaningless? I don't really see the logic in that.
It still gives you a general idea of what the person is talking about, even if it's not very specific.

 

In my opening post I put in the desription "or a reasonable facsimile". To those of us who like indie we are not going to confuse Mariah Carey or Lady Gaga as indie and we also know many indie bands have signed to major labels and have gotten big. This waas going to be a thread about exploring good music in the last 25 years that mostly isn't mainstream and not squabble about the term.
